Tire size on 8.5 rim

Hi, how wide of tire can I run on a 8.5 in wide rim? I currently have 235/40 r17's on there but I'm looking to run as wide of a tire I can on the rear.
Thanks

I have 255/45/18's on my 8.5" Bullitt wheels and they fit fine. It's not recommended to go any wider than a 255, but I know a lot of people have.

Hey,

I can't blame you for wanting to run a larger tire, they will certainly help you out with traction, and they look will look great.

From our testing we found that in general a 245mm width is best on an 8.5" rim. With this being said, you could step up to 255mm for sure, however any more and you are starting to push it.

The issue you will run into is that the wider tires will require quite a bit of pinching in to sit tightly on the bead. This becomes a liability as the sidewall is stressed and compromised.

If your really set on getting a bigger tire than a 255, I would consider getting new wheels. If you stick with a 17" diameter, you can get a 10.5" wide wheel that can hold a 315 tire with ease.

When you do pull the trigger on a set of wheels or tires, keep in mind we offer a 6% discount to our forum members. Also, if you see it cheaper on a competitors site we match their price.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask myself, or contact our customer service team at the number listed below my signature. Good luck!
