Question my cobra is slower than a gt???

so i had just purchased a 97 mustang cobra, right now it has 106,9xx miles on the car, everything is very nice and smooth and clean, the car is running just fine.. i guess as far as i know, mods are steeda underdrive pulleys 410 gears, offroad h pipe and american thunder exhaust and the stock parts that come on the car originally, tires 255/50/17's pretty big. and my buddy has a 2002 gt 146,xxx miles, pretty much stock, his mods include sct tuner, radials, upper intake, CAI, plenum, offroad h-pipe with magnaflow mufflers. and i believe that is all.now the problem is i have been trying to do all this research on if this is even possible, i looked up so many cobra vs gt mustang races and pretty much 95% of the time the cobra woops up on the gt. the only thing i can imagine is wrong is the guy said that he got a tune on the car and that the tune is just bad and is actually ******* the car down, some way some how i have only had the car for 3 days now, i love he car and everything and no matter what am happy to have a cobra, i am just wondering if this is normal or if it is off, i am just confused and need help

Can't really comment on why your car is or isn't faster than your friends, but just a friendly heads up to a new guy, this forum is pretty anti street-racing sort of stuff and the mods will shut down threads like this pretty quick.

So.. that being said if I were you I'd edit this thread a little and just ask what you can do to make your car faster than your friend's '02! I'm sure somebody has some better advice than me in that regard, I don't know much about the older cars.

seems normal to me. The cobra motors aren't that much stronger than the GT motors, plus his upgrades and tuner would probably put him out front of you anyway.

Also, sounds like you just got the car, so you're not going to know how to get the most out of it right away. I beat a guy in an 07 GT in my 04 a few months back, just because I knew how to drive my car.

Don't fret though, few mods and you'll be beating him again.

As mentioned above . . .

TMS does not advocate or promote street racing. Please feel free to post about racing exploits at a sanctioned venue. Please edit thread accordingly and thank you in advance.

i want to apologize, i am obviously new and i will change/edit my post as soon as i figure out how to and thank you for the comments, there isnt much that i have seen that you can do to upgrade cobras, because they have some mods already, what are some of the best beginning mods that i can do, and can a tune slow down your car or make it lose power? the buy before me said he had stl mustangs put a laptop tune on it. this may be true but i dont know, i would love to get a dyno tune. but at the moment i dont have any money, but im guessing the car would run anywhere from 13.9-14.1, which also doesnt seem normal.

No offense, and others can correct me if im wrong, but your cobra is Old compared to lots of the newer cars. running that time for a car that old shouldnt be a surprise. Its not supercharged or heavily modded it seems. Do some searches on the thread under your platform, and you will great PLENTY of great ideas and options for your car. You can bring those times down easily.. But thats a pretty normal time as far as i know.

Normal. I have seen these times with gears and cat backs, some really experienced guys have gotten a mid- high 13 stock. also the tune can be an issue you could also have some injectors that are not 100% and carbon deposits. there are many little things that will slow a car down.

Just race from a 50mph roll. If he out powers you again, yeah he's faster. From a dig, it's all driver.

When I had my 99 GT I raced a few 96-98 Cobras and never lost to one.

Clean your IMRC's. With your mods, you should be running low 13's. What are you launching and shifting at?

I beat him off the launch every single time but it seems like in the long run he starts to catch up and if not pull away from me..

With Mods its another story, a bolt on 32v will make larger jumps than a bolt on GT.

But stock for stock I would wager a 99 GT is atleast equal in speed to a 96-98 Cobra. My 99GT and I are pretty light, so I always had the weight advantage on any of the Cobras I raced.
