Hood Pins

Anyone have any suggestions on a good set of hood pins? I've grown tired of continually having to fix my hood release cable, that I'm thinking of just removing it and holding the hood down with some hood pins. Looking for suggestions on the easiest set to install myself.....and good enough quality that I won't have to worry about whether or not the hood is secure.

I bought a set of FRPP from Summit. I sold to my buddy, but they worked good on his 01 Cobra. I can't remember if he had long enough to rust, though. Hear some rust.

Whatever you buy, be careful about the cable that holds the pin. His causes some rubbing on his hood. I do remember that.

I hear if you have an aftermarket hood, they are a must! I went with the 96-98 Cobra factory hood, so they weren't needed.

Get the Steeda kit. No cables and they lock so you don't have to worry about some jackalope kid stealing your pins...

Thanks Guys, any tips on install? I've seen a few write ups for the 05-09's, just not sure what the best spots are to put the pins on the SN95's.

Patrick.....are these the Steeda ones you were referring to?

Yep those are the ones I have. I used to have the FRPP ones but got sick of the cable look, so I removed the cables and just used the pins. Then one day I came out to my car and someone had stolen one pin. ...

I used the spots where the factory hood bumpstops are. No drilling required.

Thanks, that sounds perfect. I think I'll go ahead and order up a set and install them this fall. Hopefully the snow I encounter this winter won't cause any issues.

Actually, I have one I drive in the winter and one I drive in the summer. I just like Mustangs so much, that when I bought my new one, my old one just became my winter car.

How's the V6 with the 3.73s? That's on my "to do soon" list...

Definitely quicker. I get through first gear so fast that sometimes I almost want to bypass it, but I'm still glad I switched. It also really improves acceleration at higher speeds, but at the same time I can tell there is a degradation to the fuel economy. Not that I feel like I'm filling up all the time, just that when I'm in 5th on the highway it doesn't feel like an "overdrive" gear, I can still get some decent acceleration in 5th. Hope this helps. If I had it to do over, I would still choose the 3.73's, especially for the V6. I think 4.10's would be a little too much in a manual, but 3.55's not quite enough for the V6. That's just my opinion though.

Cool thanks. I have an auto but it will eventually have a T56. I'm hoping to find an 8.8" or IRS for cheap, then do the 3.73s before the swap. I just remembered, obviously you WILL have to drill into the hood for the posts to go through, but removing the bumpstops should give you enough room to not have to drill out the headlight panel...

No problem. For some reason, I'm not worried about drilling the hood, was more concerned about drilling into the underhood area, at it would seem critical to get any underhood holes to be perfectly straight and even. If there are existing points, it assures they will be straight and equal distance apart.

....and for the gears, while you still have the auto, I would think the 3.73's would be great.

I think I'm going to have a few projects ahead of me before the '99 is ready for winter. The battery is dead, I couldn't pop the hood, and the brakes seem to have locked up as I couldn't move it while in neutral. Hopefully it doesn't translate into anything overly expensive.
