96 GT Mustang throttle body

I have a 1996 gt mustang 4.6. When I got the car the throttle body had a hole in the side close to the bottom on the left of it, where something might have plugged into it like a hose or something. A local mechanic told me to tap the hole and thread a bolt in it. Anyone have any ideas what could have went there or any pics of one?

I wouldn't worry about it at all. It was common or at least for us fox guys and I'm sure for some other platforms when we had a whistling TB problem ( it was often from an aftermarket TB) for people to drill in it, the blade and try other things. Professional products TB would whistle. The topic hasn't been brought up in years but whistling TB was an issue and prbally that is what was done. It isn't going to hurt anything.

Still waiting on the rain to quit. I thought if it was sucking in air anywhere else besides the filter it would be unmetered air causing driving problems

How big of a hole we talking about? If it is big enough yeah. To fix the TB whistle was a tiny hole but most of the time it was in the blade. wonder of someone tried shooting juice in through that way, I have seen crazier stuff. Forget the crazy idea of sticking a bolt in it, that is nuts. use some JB weld to plug it and smooth it over or if you have a welding shop around you have them plug weld it and grind it smooth.

The hole is about 1/2 thread size, the mechanic told me that he is more familiar with the 5.0 but he seemed to recall that on the 4.6 that a vacuum hose went there.

No vacuum line or hose goes into the TB that I know of, factory or aftermarket:

The plenum has a line to it.

Okay I see what you are talking about. It isn't on all TBs, if you look at the pics you can see that not all have this. if you look at the accufab TB it probally has some type of plug in it and no doubt goes to the butterfly blade during construction for setting the blade but it also looks like part of a formed cavity for the TPS also. I have looked at tons of pics and even on TB installs to double check. It really looks like the plug fell out, nothing like a vacuum line goes in it. you need to plug it because yes I can see now how it is sucking in air or change out the TB.

use this link, click on the install link they have a video. The TB looks like yours but you can see that there is no vacuum hose going to it.

hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help, I will probably end up plugging it. Now if I can just figure out my P1443 code I should be good to go.

Code 1443 is the evaporative emissions control system. This was a common code for teh '96 since it was the 1st year that purge flow was monitored by the computer.replace the purge flow sensor and diconnect your battery for 15 minutes or so and the code should go away. replace the canister purge soleniod 2nd if the code comes back since there is a chance but not always that they both can be the problem. 99% it is the sensor.

Purge Flow Sensor Part # F57Z-14A606-BA.

other causes for the code:

not tightening the gas cap enough, a bad cap or bad purge solenoid along with teh above I gave you. best of luck.

That looks like the sensor. When it went on my '97 I purchased the AC/Delco one because in the photos it looked most like the OEM. When I got it was identical with the Ford logo and part number removed from it.
