96 GT Mustang 1/4 mile time

I have a 96 gt mustang that has a cold air intake, x pipe, no converters, and flow master mufflers. Does anyone have any idea what it might run a 1/4 mile in? What about drag racing against a 98 z-28 camaro with everything stock except having a catback exhaust system?

Assuming its a 5speed,Without any drag radials, your probably looking at a 14.8-15.2 that's if you have a decent launch technique. These cars really need 3:73 or 4:10s to compliment the power it makes it the 4,000 plus rpm range.

Forgot to mention, years ago I had a completely stock GT 5speed ... Best ET 15.17 ... Usually 15.25-15.3.. Depending on weather conditions.

I've seen a stock 98 go 14.9.

It would be close. The lt1s are geared low as well. I would have to give the nod to the camaro though.

I was afraid of that. I will have to work on getting a little bit more horsepower.

Don't worry about a tuner until you instal some 4.10 gears

Get a sct tuner from AM. You get free tunes for life I believe so when you do different upgrades they can send you a tune for them. They work well with other mods and you'll see a small boost in hp in stock. But it will mostly compliment your mods well.

When the time comes.. Seriously consider the PI head swap! It's relatively inexpensive compared to a set of Trick flow or other aftermarket heads...along with some 4.10s CAI /exhaust and tune you'd be deep into the 13's

In 1999, the F-Series 5.4 L 2V and the Mustang 4.6 L 2V received upgrades which included cylinder heads with improved port and combustion chamber designs, a more aggressive cam profile, and improved intake manifolds. This upgrade was known as the PI (Performance Improved) package, adding these heads on a 96-98 has an edge even over the 99+ mustangs... Adding the PI swap increases compression in 96-98 4.6 engines!
-- as far as the 4.10's question, It's your rear differential Gears not the transmission gears...you'll find it's a huge topic when talking mustangs , as you gain knowledge on parts and ask questions you'll see time and time again the popularity of the 3:73 or 4:10 gears!

So basically, if I can find a 99 gt mustang wrecked or junked out. I could get the head from it. How difficult is it to change cylinder heads. I have medium experience in mechanics.

Yes you'd need the heads (complete) and intake manifold with the aluminum crossover coolant tube. You'll also need from ford all the gaskets and hardware to support the swap ...
Intake Gaskets
Thermostat and O-Ring
Head Gaskets
Head Bolts OEM
Exhaust Gaskets
Valve Cover Gaskets
Spark plugs
Timing Cover Gaskets
Water Pump Gasket
- there may be a few items I've overlooked , helped a buddy do the swap years ago . I suggest you have some guidance with the swap, I'm not saying you can't do it yourself because if you follow the general heads installing guide from any reputable book ex-chilton/Haines manual you can do it... Though anyone doing an Over Head Cam for the first time might feel overwhelmed. These 96-98 stangs are so overlooked by so many people... This swap makes a world of difference and will suprise many people

A bone stock 98 z28 can run the 1/4 mile in 13.6@104. That was the first year of the ls1.
