I searched here for info on the VSS wire, but I got conflicting results. Some threads said the wire isn't there at all...and others said it isn't needed. But then another one said you HAVE to hook it up, as did the instruction manual for my nav (Alpine NVE-N872A).

Does anyone have an absolute answer on this?

From what I understand, you don't have to hook it up. If you leave it off you will not get as accurate results supposedly. I went ahead and hooked mine up and it's been working great for me but I also did the bypass on my AVIC-D1 so I could use it while moving.

Checkout Hawgman's post on the VSS wire.

The VSS wire *is* absolutely on the '05 Mustang GT (and I presume it's in same location on the '06), but no; you don't *have* to hook it up. (At least you don't on the AVIC-D1; ymmv with any other unit.) I tried my AVIC-D1 both with and without the VSS; I like it with VSS better - just seems to show a more accurate fix. And I, like withinavoid, also did the bypass on my AVIC-D1 - now works like it should have out of the factory.

so its just a matter of splicing the vss wire from the nav into the wire on the PCM box?

update-

on the 12volt forum, a guy replied to this same question-

"Good Evening SURFNSOCAL,

Unfortunately your vehicle has no VSS.they have OSS(Output Shaft Speed)only.here is solution:

1 no hook up VSS,then wait for CAN-BUS interface from Soundgate or similar mfg. 2 use API(analog to pulse interface) from Beijer Automotive from Neitherland then convert OSS to VSS. Some one try to hook up OSS from this vehicle's PCM(Powertrain Control Module),But We never do this.We think this may cause the damage of transmission or PCM. If you want to try OSS picking up, use diode just in case.

Good Luck! Happy Holidays"

(he's from Japan)

Does this make sense?

Correct... The 05's no longer have VSS, it is OSS. PCM reads the OSS and makes up its own VSS inside of the PCM, so its electronic. You can read it with a scan tool and bring up the VSS pid.

If you do not hook it up, you will not get an accurate location on your GPS, and depending on the GPS it will not give you your accurate speed, or destination arrival time.

If you want to hook up the wire, hook it up here.

alright Doc, I trust ya. But that guy scared me with saying if I hooked it up via the PCM...I could damage stuff.

Well, technically he is correct. There is a chance that something could be damaged by hooking it up. There is a chance that you could damage something slamming your hood too hard. He is just covering his butt in case you happen to hook up to the wrong wire, or somehow ground the wire and start the car, or whatever, and then try to come back on him and say that he told you to hook it up.

Come to think of it.... *Disclaimer- There is the outside chance of possibly damaging your electrical system, your navigation system, or your PCM by improperly hooking up this wire. I take no responisbility of damages should this occur.

It's all cool man. Many people out there running navigation systems with the OSS wire connected to the VCC wire on the navigation unit.

alright....do I splice it in before it goes in the PCM....or directly where it connects to the PCM? ex. back on the wire...or at the end?

I spliced mine close to the plug. It needs to be near the plug and not down in the harness. In fact, my spice is close enough that the plug cover actually covers the splice up.

I took off the passenger side wheel, then removed the inner liner (towards the rear of the wheelwell). This exposes the routing for the radio antenna, which passes through the firewall directly into the passenger compartment. Easy enough to punch a little hole in the grommet around that antenna and then thread your VSS wire through and into the engine compartment from there.

darn. I hooked up the VSS wire off my nav and spliced it it in to the wire shown in that picture. still says the VSS wire is not connected on the nav screen. I discconnected the battery to see if I can reset things. I hope that works.

I met a 2005 vert owner that had a system, with GPS installed. He told me that the installer went with a connection to the ABS at the rear wheels. 2005 do not have a VSS. As for the PCM module, I would stay away from that. He has had it installed for over 5 months now and he has not said anything about any trouble via the ABS. I am not a mechanic so can't tell you more, but I would bet it would have something to do with the traction control system since that works in conjunction with the ABS. Might be worth a check out.

Trust me, the OSS wire for a VSS signal is what he wants and it is not going to damage the PCM to splice to that wire. Provided he does not screw up the splice and ground it somehow.

As stated in the PM, my vehicle sensor speed was all kinds of jacked for the first day. It said I was doing 180 down my driveway!. Next day, everything was normal.

As for the positioning, that is going to boil down to your GPS itself and how it interacts with the satellite. When I mentioned earlier on in the thread about positioning, I meant the GPS's ability to determin your speed and destination arrival time, not how many feet you actually are from where the GPS says you are. The OSS signal from the car is not going to have anything to do with that.
