So I just added two 10" subs in my trunk with my shaker 500. even with the subs turned down low, there is horrible rattling from the entire trunk area. the actual trunk rattles, the rear bumper rattles, and pretty much every panel in the rear. from inside the car, it sounds great. i just hate how pathetic it sounds from the outside. my car sounds like some ghetto ride now. what did ford do on shaker 1000 systems to combat rattles and what have you guys done to quiet the vehicle? i know dynamat will help, but it's expensive. any low cost alternatives that work?

I put dynamat on my trunk lid and now it's rattle free. It only cost me about $60 which isn't too bad.

Check out the site below for some good information on sound dampening. I went with Second Skin for my trunk. I have 2 10" subs in the trunk facing the rear and my trunk lid really dances when I have system cranked up. Haven't installed the Second Skin yet, but I am hoping it will solve the problem/

i just bought some material at home depot that worked great. it's some type of window seal that is almost identical to dynamat. it came in a 6" by 25' roll and cost $15. the results were exactly what i was looking for

BMWtech,

That is a self adhesive flashing. I used the exact same stuff to dampen some rattles I had on the inlet duct of my dust collector cyclone. At around 1800 cfm when it is not attached to the ducting, it REALLY buzzed the inlet duct. After wrapping the duct and part of the cyclone in the flashing, all the vibration went away. Nice stuff and a WHOLE lot cheaper than the Dynomat type products. Probably doesn't work as well, but for 1/10 the price, I'll take the slight reduction in performance!

Peel -n-seal. It's actually a roofing mastic. It will work, but the adhesive isn't nearly as good, and it will probably melt and run all over in the summer. You will have a serious mess. Seriously, be careful. I'd hate to see a pretty pony all gooed up.

Melting stuff in your car sucks!!! I live in South Florida and in the summer parts in my BMW melt, every fall I spend hourd cleaning up and replaceing parts. If there is something that might melt in your car and can be replaced with something that dosent do it.
Trust Me

You don't know what you are talking about. The adhesive on this stuff DOES work. Very well. And it DOES handle the heat (I live in New Mexico). I also used some of this stuff on the exterior of my shop (a metal sided building) that got lots of direct sunlight. When I moved the dust collector, I had to remove the flashing that I was using to seal the inlet to the side of the shop. Some of it I was able to pull off. 3/4 of it just would not come off, so I ended up cutting the flashing instead. It sticks. Very well.

And there definitely are no signs of melting either. Do you know how hot the side of a metal building gets when exposed to direct summer sunlight in New Mexico? It should be fine inside the trunk of your car.

The guy who did the testing at "sounddeadnershowdown.com" says he wouldn't use Peel n seal in his car because of the possibility of it melting in high heat. If you did it without it melting, then congratulations, but I live in Phoenix, AZ and would not take a chance on putting it in my GT's trunk just to save a few bucks.

Yep, that, and I installed stereos as a living for nearly 7 years. The peel and seal works, I never said it wouldn't, but it isn't the best choice. It also doesn't take well to extreme temperature cycling. You wouldn't see it to the extreme where you live. In this area, temps go from around -30F to 120F at the extremes. The adhesives don't hold well. I actually don't recommend ANY asphalt-based deadener. A butyl-rubber based deadener will outeperform the tarry junk, and it will be lighter. There's also the added bonus of the lack of smell.

You guys in AZ DO get a bit hotter than most of the rest of the country. I don't think I would want to use it someplace where it gets up to 115F in the shade either. Of course, I wouldn't want to LIVE some place were it gets to 115F in the shade either! (although, I have visited Phoenix a few times in July/August with it up to 114F and it wasn't so bad. I just hate hot nights!)

I read the article at www.sounddeadnershowdown.com. He did not test the roofing products. He said he looked into them and dismissed them due to his CONCERNS over heat. Strangely enough, he then goes on to talk about other products that appear to be the Peal-n-stick product. From his conclusions: "I can see no difference in Peel & Seal and the asphalt based aluminum skinned products in this review."

What would I take from this? If you are going to dismiss Peal-n-stick, then you better dismiss ALL the asphalt based deadeners and go straight to butyl products. Which is exactly what you did with your follow up post Aaron.

Of course, I also have to add that I have NOT installed any of the Peal-n-stick to my car. Only tools in my shop (where it has worked perfectly). Just be sure to dismiss all the asphalt deadeners when you dismiss the Peal-n-stick. Because if the "automotive" asphalt deadeners will work in your application, then the Peal-n-stick will also work and probably be a lot cheaper.

I got some b-quiet and while I have not been able to 100% kill the rattle I have beaten the monster to the point to where I am very happy.

What you need to do before buying anything is this. The black panel that holds your trunk light and the emergency release handle. give 'er a tug and pull that off. Close your trunk and hit the bass. I can almost guarantee you will be surprised at how much less rattle you'll hear. That was the biggest pain in my hiney.
