Sync coming as Ford Accessory for 08-09 Mustangs, July 2008.
Our new Ford Accessory rep has just confirmed that Sync will be available for the Mustang, 2008 and 2009 model years coming in July 2008, as well as most other 08 and 09 Ford's as a fully functional accessory unit with full media and phone integration. Current estimated MSRP is around $300 for the unit. I'll post more info as it becomes available in the future.
Am I hearing correctly? Sync will be offered as a retrofit for 08 Mustangs for $300?
If thats true then its a deal. So is the original Shaker 500 headunit replaced when you install Sync?

New ordered 08s with sync, maybe. Retrofit for that price, nope. Retrofit if it becomes available will be in the range of just under 2k (according to 3 different dealerships I've talked to about it...I really wanted it and went a lookin). A lot of wiring has to change plus the steering wheel has to be replaced with the one with the sync controls.
If they could retrofit the sync with my factory nav HU, I'd pay a lot for it.....a lot.

It will be an accessory piece available for around that price, around $500 installed if you do it at a dealer, the accessory rep has confirmed this and it will be available for both 08's and 09's, it will work with all stock factory head units, shaker's and navigation systems, he says he already saw the prototype, the release delay is so it works on all head units seamlessly. This information came from a Ford corporate accessory sales manager, there probably won't be a steering wheel change, everything will be controlled through voice, the head unit, or some type of add-on box that sticks to the dash. We will just have to wait and see, but it is confirmed, Sync will be available as an accessory from Ford.

So we are looking at it as a dealer installed acessory which would mean a pretty easy retrofit? And like 400 installed so less for a diy?
Awesome. So the sync allows selecting songs by voice, talking through your cell phone over bluetooth, displaying and reading out loud text messages? What else?
Does it select tracks across the CD changer or does it have a hard drive?
What are the compatibility requirements with cell phones? It should work great with a Windows Mobile smart phone.

Definitely something I wanted. They actually had them coming out when I picked up my 08. I should say, they had them out in the frikkin focus, fusion or whatever the hell it was.
Standing by to hear a price to have it fitted into my 08.

If its built by Periphreial Electronics like the HD Radio upgrade....I'll pass. That was the worst $300 I spent in quite a while. It does not work. The manufacture will not refund as I bought it from Ford. Ford will not refund as its past 90 days and they strung me along trying to make it work and exchanging 3 times. So it sits in a box on my workbench. They rushed it to market and never did get it really working,
Why am I all that surprised. The 07s with nav unit dont all work correclty either and now am told the speed error is 'normal operation' on an 07....Ford and its electronics suppliers need to get this stuff to work correctly before foisting it on the public and then hiding behind corporate bs.

About SYNC being retorfittable via aftermarket? My service manager was at the Ford aftermarket/accessory meeting, but he told me that the aftermarket SYNC is ONLY available for cars that offer it as an option FROM THE FACTORY (i.e Fusion, Focus, Edge, etc. NO MUSTANG) !! Now, until I get back to work on Tuesday (were closed tomorrow) to confirm this, he was pretty sure of it. The reason its only for vehicles that have it as an option, as the car is already set up for it, in some way or another.
Our Ford Accessory rep stated that it will be an accessory, built by Ford/Microsoft, not by peripheral, and it will be the only way to get Sync into the 08 or 09 Mustangs. It will not be a factory option for '09. Sync will also be available as an accessory add-on on most other 08 and 09 Fords.
I received some more info from the rep. Instead of using the steering wheel phone button, which Mustang's don't have. There will be a module that will need to be stuck to the dash, console, or some other part of the car, that will have the phone button on it, similar to how the mobile ease accessory unit works. Except that in additon to bluetooth phone, it will have all the entertainment benefits of sync.
Pretty cool. It would be nice to see something that looked cleaner but that should indicate a possible retrofit.
So does this search through the disc changer to find an MP3 on cd or does it just look at a single CD?
Do you have any of the SYNC manuals in a PDF?

Hmm.... I just picked up my GT/CS last week, The factory nav has a phone button on it. This has replaced the mute button i've seen on other factory units.
I wonder if it will tie in somehow?
