Steering Wheel Replacement?

I'm toying with the idea of swapping out my stock one for a gt500. Who has done this before and were there any major issues?

Quite a few of us have put the GT500 or Bullitt steering wheels in our Mustangs (they are the same except for the stitching). It took me around half an hour to remove my stock GT wheel and install the Bullitt steering wheel. It has to be my favorite mod to date, although in my case I had the really cheap feeling plastic (non-IUP) steering wheel in mine. If you search, there should be several threads about the swap, including simple instructions.

Some debate over whether you have to pull the airbag fuse or just disconnect the battery & wait. I pulled the fuse just to be safe. Others did not pull the fuse and had no problems.

I did both to be overly cautious, but the install itself is super simple and takes all of 20 min. And eventhough I had the IUP wheel, the Bullitt is a nice improvement as it not only looks better, but also is more comfortable with padded/contoured thumb areas

I would get the 2010 GT500 wheel now if you don't mind the extra stereo buttons. Cubican's original thread was lost in the crash but here it is on Mustangcollective.

My wheel is arriving today and for those of you who have done the swap I have a question. In both my shop manual and Haynes it says to discard the steering wheel retaining bolt and use a new one. Does the wheel come with a new bolt , or did you use the old one or get a new one ? Thanks ...

I used the old one. I believe most people that have done this just reused the old bolt, but I remember a couple people saying they bought a new one from Ford.

We bought our Bullitt wheel from Mr. "KC" and it came from him with the new factory replacement streering wheel bolt. This is also our favorite interior mod and was a no sweat install! You will love the upraded look and feel it will give you!! CalStang

Bought mine used and the seller sent one. I don't think it is mandatory, but this is supposely another one of those single use bolts.
