Thumbs up

Hi all. Did a search but couldn't find it. Soooo, anyway. I changed out my stock 5-sp shifter to a Steeda Short-throw, and added an MRT **** to it. Looks and works GREAT!!

BUT: Now the shift-boot itself, doesn't fit. Don't think I'm reinventing the wheel here. But that large Loop has to go. Does anyone know of an adapter that can be purchased to hold it up tight to the new shifter? Or is there another type of Boot out there that will do the job?
I'm ready to cut it if neccessary, but thought I'd ask first.

When I did the same to my 99 GT. A simple chrome gromet and short sleeve did the trick. Not large sewn in loop to deal with.

Any thoughts out there?? :bang:

WOW. 47 views, but no responses as yet.

Maybe I am re-inventing the wheel here.

Someone here had a similar problem and used an additional nut below the shift **** with a large fender washer on top of that. They used the nut and washer to draw the boot up to the bottom of the ****, then snapped the lower portion of the boot back in place. If you do a search you may be able to find the orginal post, but that should give you the info you need.

I bet this is the thread your looking for http://forums.bradbarnett.net/index.php?sh...ic=35243&hl=mrt

Your the first person I have seen install the Steeda short-throw. Did you install it yourself? Did it take awhile or was it easy?

Ok, I just ripped apart my stock shifter boot, and installed the Redline Goods leather one. The large loop in the top of the stock shift boot is a big bulky O-ring, that's all it is. It is glued in place by cutting the top of the shift boot into strips, and then gluing them down around the O-ring to keep it in place. You can gently pull the leather back up (the glue is not strong enough to rip the leather, not for me anyway) and then you have just the bare shift boot (with the small hole cut into strips with glue residue on it).

Now you have a variety of choices. You can get a smaller/thinner O-ring, and put it back in it's place so that it is not as baggy around the shift rod. Or, you can do what I did. Put the shift boot around the shift rod, but don't pop it into place around the console. Screw on your shift ****, and get it where you want it. Now lift up on the shift boot base (the plastic rectangle) and lift so the base is above the shift ****, basically turning it inside out. Now you have access to the under side of the shift boot where the small hole cut into strips is around the shift ****.

I used a very small zip tie, and positioned the shift boot where I wanted, then pulled the zip tie tight and cut off the rest of it. Then I put the shift boot back down and snapped it into place, and the zip tie holds the top of the shift boot firm to right below the ball.

Make sense?

I'll get you some pics if you need them. Hope this helps,

Hatch

Yes I can! I actually changed my mind on the zip tie, since I could feel the bump of the connection square under the leather. This probably wouldn't even be noticed by 99% of the population, but I could, so I changed it. I ended up using safety wire, twisted just tight enough to keep the leather in the groove on the shift ****, but not near tight enough to cut through the leather. And since it's only the width of a piece of wire, you can't feel it under the leather. A small, strong rubber band would probably do the same thing, but I knew the safety wire wouldn't stretch and come out of the groove.

Anyway, here's some pics of the final product. Note that this is a Hurst Shifter, so it sits the **** about 3/4" higher than normal.

The leather doesn't quite match, but I can live with it.

Also, here are some pics showing the length of the throw between 1st and 2nd.

Thanks Hatch. I took it one step further. Mainly because I changed out the **** too. Soooo, after inverting the boot cover, and tying it off. I tucked it down, and buried the 0-Ring, thus now I have a nice tight fit on the shifter itself, way low. Enables the visual of the whole shifter (seeing's how I repalced it anyway, and now does not interfere either with the actual replacement MRT ****. Right now I have it all apart again, as I am Painting the Console to blend better with the interior theme I am trying to create with the new RedLineGoods Leather added. Here's a Pic, BEFORE the Redline add ons, with just the Stock Vinyl.
