Shaker 1000 w/ Sirius & iPod cont. – PIE X3 solution – also found 12V switched source

Side note before I get started: While installing this I finally found the elusive +12V switched power source many have searched for. It’s the solid red wire in the larger (driver side) connector that goes into the Shaker head unit. It’s right next to the yellow (+12V constant) and black (ground) wires.

I know it’s an old topic but not many solutions have been discussed on TMS so I thought I’d share in case others are searching. This is a follow on to this old thread. I went with the logjamelectronics PIE X3 solution. This applies to those who want to keep the Shaker and OEM SIRIUS, and also want to have the 3.5mm AUX input found in the 2007+ cars. This seems to be the only direct audio connect solution (i.e., non FM modulated) that plays an MP3 player through the shaker while also having OEM SIRIUS. In my case, all my music is on my phone via an micro-SD chip so I really wanted a 3.5mm jack in my car.

The following three purchases were necessary for my installation:

PIE X3 Universal Triple Auxiliary Input Adapter/Switcher ($44.98)
This is different than the well known PIE FRD04-AUX, although it's from the same manufacturer, which emulates the OEM accessory (such as SIRIUS) and allows the shaker to play an MP3 player. Rather, the X3 is an audio interrupter. The Shaker thinks it is playing your OEM SIRIUS (the Shaker display will continue show the SIRIUS channel/artist/song info you’re tuned to) but the X3 interrupts the audio and instead feeds your MP3 player audio to the Shaker. A remote audio selector is included so that you can switch between SIRIUS audio and MP3 player audio. It actually allows you to plug in three separate inputs however I’m only using one. I installed the X3 in the center stack below the Shaker (directly behind the A/C controls and on top of the vehicle restraint module). My only negative comment is the remote audio selector feels and looks cheap. Not too big of a deal since I installed it inside the center console out of sight (pic below). I attached the remote by removing the two screws on the back and using longer screws to "bolt" it to the removable panel inside the center console.

PIE X3-FRD/P2 X3 Harness for select 2003-06 Ford/Lincoln/Mercury ($19.98)
This necessary harness connects between the X3 and the Shaker. Although the harness makes the audio connection between your SIRIUS and the Shaker head unit easy, you have to do the power splicing yourself via three loose hanging wires. I chose to solder those connections. Although the directions tell you what the wires are for, they do not tell you which color wire does what or where to splice them into your car. Answer is Yellow=+12V constant, Red=+12V Switched, Black=ground. Source of this power are found in the larger connector (driver’s side connector) that goes into the Shaker head unit in the exact same wire colors. +12V constant and ground can also be found at the power point (cigarette lighter) at the top of the center stack.

iSimple PDM35/iS335 3.5mm Dashboard Mount Audio input Kit ($15.98)
Not absolutely necessary but makes an OEM looking installation by allowing you to install a flush mount 3.5mm audio port. I installed mine in the center console. Kit includes a short Red/White RCA to 3.5mm cable, a 6 ft 3.5mm to flush mount 3.5mm cable. And a 3 ft 3.5mm cable to plug in your MP3 player.

So that's it! It sounds GREAT!!! I'm so glad I didn't go FM Modulated (ala TripTunes). As for the installation, it was a little tedious to get the X3 to fit in the tight space below the Shaker and a lot of time was lost figuring out where to splice the power wires (but I figure that out for you so you need not worry). The rest was pretty easy. Below is a pic of the flush mount 3.5mm audio jack and remote audio selector which I installed in the center console.

My question is, if your car did not come with sirius would you need the normal PIE adapter for this to work or will this work on its own. Also my car does not come with sirius (early '06 before the option was available), would it be better if i just get the PIE adapter to connect my Zune, or would what you did be a better solution.

Yes, the PIE X3 must have a working OEM SIRIUS to function. The Shaker needs the handshake with the SIRIUS to allow the audio to pass through. My 2006 is an early model as well but I was able to add and the OEM SIRIUS from 05stangkc. The reason the X3 was such a revelation to me was that I thought I had to give up the AUX input for the SIRIUS (at the time SIRIUS was more important to me than my MP3 player). Now with the X3, I can have both.

If you do not have the OEM SIRIUS but still want the AUX for your MP3 player, you cannot use the X3. You would have to buy the PIE FRD04 AUX. I originally had the PIE FRD 04 AUX and it worked well with the exception that once a month it would stop working and would need to be reset. To reset, it I'd have to pull the fuse of the power source that the PIE was on and plug it back in (i.e., cycle the power to the PIE)... very annoying. However, if you hook the PIE up to a switched power source (which I've now found... red wire) it will reset every time you start the car.. problem solved. Couple that with the Dashboard mount audio input kit and you'd have a pretty OEM looking/working setup.

ok thats what i needed to know. Really i am waiting to get my whole system together which includes a Pioneer Avic Z110 and i will just get the sirius and AUX together on that, but untill then i took out my sirius radio in the car because i was tired of seeing it in the windshield. I rarely drive the car, i would much rather just have my Zune for the time being till i finish getting all the stuff for my new system.

In my 06 with Shaker 500, I use the PIE FRD04-AUX and the XM Skydock. My Ipod Touch acts as my XM radio as well as my MP3 player. Works great.

Hello,

This has been an interesting post but I have a few questions. I currently have a 2005 with the shaker 500 and would like to get a XM radio to work through the head unit like the sirius system would. This shaker does not have the sirius system due to the fact it was not offered at the time of ordering. What would I need to do to accomplish this? Thank you.

What you are loooking for is the not-so-cheap OEM sirius unit that can be added to an OEM shaker. This old thead talks about the part.
