Rear Deck Speaker Options

Has anyone tried mounting 6x9 speakers to the rear deck in place of either the 5x7 or 6x8 speakers. I am thinking that I would like to do that but am a little reluctant. I think I would need to cut the rear deck cover and mount the speakers externally so they would be visible above the fabric on the rear deck (hope that makes sense). My thought is that by mounting the speakers in the stock location you get a degree of muffling due to the deck cover and I wanted to eliminate that......any thoughts?

dont even bother, just replace the fronts, amplify them if youve got the $$. I replaced my rears, even had them running off an amp at one point; in retrospect, i could have saved myself the money/time/sweat/tears/blood/back muscle pain

yea if you want to replace them then fo ahead, but as far as worrying about the muffeling you will never be able to tell the difference. Its not worth th effort. Like the guy above said, focus your efforts on the front speakers

I am 3/4 of the way done with my stereo overhaul. If you have any specific questions just ask as I have almost finished installing:

Alpine INA-W910 head unit
Alpine 5 channel amp-
50x4 to front & rear speakers
200x1 to front door sub (in series)
Alpine 500x1 to trunk sub
Shelby Kicker 8" door subs
JL Audio C5 5x7 components front doors
JL Audio C2 5x7 rear deck
JL Audio 13W6 Stealthbox in trunk

I have dynamatted the front door panels as to make the plastic sub enclosure better for the kicker 8's @ 100 watts each. I also dynamatted the doors themselves and I have dynamatted the entire rear deck and rear side walls. I plan on dynamiting everything else as time goes on but that's all for now.

I removed the factory front sub amps and made a bracket to mount one crossover there and made a bracket to mount the other crossover above the glove box.

I made two shelves and suspended them from the rear deck for the two amps. I have run 4 gauge wire to the trunk into a distribution box to power the amps. I ran all new speaker wire to ALL speakers including through kick panels into the doors. I have 4 pairs of RCA's running to the amps. EVERY wire and cable run has been placed in wire loom as to prevent any interference ( overkill I'm sure but thats how I roll).

I have run into just about every hurdle imaginable and just may be able to answer any questions you may have.

Good luck and enjoy!

sounds awesome! do you have pics up anywhere by chance?

Did the radio today, doing the speakers tomorrow. I want to get going on my amps. Only problem is they used to be in a lager trunk and are quite big. I want to get them in without taking up a lot of space

Here are what I have for pictures on my phone. I will take some pictures of the amps suspended from the rear deck tomorrow and post them. I did not loose any trunk space hanging them from the rear deck.

Here are some pictures of my amps suspended from the rear deck. The 5 channel is tucked into the drivers side corner and the mono amp hangs from the middle because the stealthbox prevents it from being in the other corner. I will wrap the threaded rods and nuts to complete the install once I am sure they don't need to be taken back down for any reason.

These pictures were taken from a crouched down position. They are 100% not visible from a standing position.

I doubt I am the first to do it. I can say it was my idea to put it there and not something I have seen before but I am sure I am not the first. I first ran the wires from the amp down each side for the left and right front speakers. I then thought of the idea to mount the left one where the stock amp was and was initially bummed I didn't pre plan this because I could have mounted the right one right next to it where the second factory amp was. I then decided to come up with a good spot on the passengers side for the right crossover because I didn't want to re-run the wire to the drivers side and that's when I found the spot just above the glove box. I knew the crossover wasn't going to fit behind the door panel in my case.

Yup I removed the amps. After the 3 nuts were removed I used a small pry bar and the came right out. Once you get the 2 door harnesses released from the door jamb plastic thingamabob getting the wires into the door will not be too bad.

Not really. I used a 1/4" ratchet with a deep socket and got right to it. Although, I did have to get in a position under the dash that would make Gumby cringe.

Are you using existing holes for those bolts? VERY clean amp setup I might have to use it someday.
