Pioneer AVIC D3?

Hey Guys - did a search and didn't find anything...

I just saw this unit on Pioneer's website and it FINALLY looks like something I've been hoping for...cutomizable colours, nav, back up camera, stock oem look and it even has a VOLUME ****! *FAINT*

hehe...so, looks like it's available Spring 2007...any audio guys know anything? Also, why is it so much cheaper then other Pioneer units?

Looks like a nice unit, having a volume **** is so nice vs. a up and down button. It's probably so much less than the others like it because 1. It has a smaller screen 2. Smaller screen eliminates the motorized drop down part 3. Only has 1 drive and is not a multi disc changer like a lot of them.

Getting a sponsored head unit has been the most difficult thing by far. I've been trying for almost a year and a half.

You should try going through a local car stereo shop. They usually have a more liberal policy and can get you the piece at a DEEEP discount.

Really? Well I would think with the success you've had with your car, you should have a compelling story for them. Also, this unit is very new and less expensive so they may be willing to part with it easier...

Also, local stores may be amicable to that as 2L8IWON mentioned - what about places like Crutchfield?

Hey Guys - found another link - a video from when they released it at the CES show.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...376305,00.html

One thing i discovered is that because it only has one drive, you have to swap map cds for route guidance in and out vs. your audio cds. however, it does allow you to program your local area to the internal memory so that for the most part, you won't need the map dvd unless you're travelling outside of that area. i like the fact that it has no moving faceplate but removing the dvd all the time might become a pain.

you can wire in a cd changer - i had one in my old car (OEM) and honestly i prefer it to the 6-cd in dash system. i find the shaker is very noisy and slow and i almost always used to have the same 6 cds in the changer, and used the single dash slot up front for occasional cds. these days with mp3 playback you could fit virtually all you'd need onto 6 mp3 cds and keep them in the trunk.

Great find! I've been looking around for a full featured double-din unit, and I think this is it!

Anyone know when it's release date is? Doesn't show up on Yahoo Shopping or eBay.

Spend the money for the AVIC-Z1, you'll be glad you did

Hey TacoBill, make sure you go to the pioneer website and do a comparison using the three models. This new D3 is really great, and what I need (esthetically and financially) but the Z1 and even D2 are more fully featured.

cobra4548 - Z1 is certainly nice, but it looks waaayyy too aftermarket to me and i *hate* volume buttons. i'm a little OCD i think but i wouldn't be able to stand them. also, it's too much money for my budget

kristina

PS - i think the release date is March or April - should be any time soon.

I was going to buy a port nav usit, but then I seen this. For $500 more I can get a in dash unit and also get the satelite radio too. Sounds like this is the unit for me. The release date is the spring so March may be the release time. I will be watching for this one.

Update - it's now listed on Crutchfield's website, but as "out of stock"

kristina, did the comparison. The D3 is still the winner in the cost vs feature category. Sure it lacks some of the features of the D2 and Z1, but coming in at $1500 and $2250, respectively, I can't see spending the extra $$ for the extra options.

And, like you mentioned, the D3 has a real volume ****.

I'll keep an eye on this unit and see what it'll actually go for once released.

Crutchfield: $999.99 Very tempting to say the least. Add a couple hundred $$$ to get the satellite radio added on and I am ready. This unit has what I need. I don't need all the bells and whistles, just the basics. Not a daily driver.

If you go with a hard drive Nav unit such as Kenwood, you can play Cds/DVDs and use the Nav at the same time.

Is it possible that this D3 unit can replace the Shaker 500 head unit using Crutchfield's wiring harness, so that it simply plugs in and still works with the factory speakers and subwoofers?

(I have already replaced the factory 6"x8" speakers front and rear with Pioneers, but am still using the factory "subs" in the door - I quoted the subs because they're not really subs)
