Need nearby 12 V source for glovebox light

I've got a glovebox light with built-in push button switch (for a '67 Mustang). It looks like it will work. I think I can mount it (just needs a hole) and I'm pretty sure I can find a place to ground it. But, is there a convenient 12V line nearby that I can tap for power?

Under the console is a plug for the Auto shifter that has 12v switched and 12v adjustable with panel lighting. Even if you have auto you can tap into the appropriate wire.

I just had a look in there

I can see two good ground points with bolts under which I could put a connector lug. But, a hot lead is a little trickier to find. There's a lot of stuff back there. A couple of plugs, but I think they are for the HVAC. And, the cable bundle from the passenger's side snakes around there too. If I use the lead from my auto shifter, it would only be on when the lights are on. A constant 12V lead would be best.

Maybe I can get to the hot lead for the power point/charger lead in the console. If I can tap off the back of that and run it up to the glovebox, that might work. It should be 12V all the time and that's good for the glovebox light. Here's a photo from Mustang's Unlimited. The bulb doesn't show, but it is at the back end of the unit.

Since you're already in the glove box why not just go a few inches lower into the fuse box and pull your 12v source and ground from there. After you drop the glove box down there is a bolt in the metal rail you can ground to if you don't want to ground inside the fuse box.

Thanks Joe, I'll try that tomorrow

I agree that the bolt on the rail in the glove box is the place to get a ground. It's easy to get to.
If I can figure out how to get a 12V connection from the fuse box, I should be OK. Mounting the light should be easy. It just needs a hole of the right diameter.

There's like 4 or 5 empty spots for fuses in that junction box under the glove box. Just go to the local auto zone or something and pick up one of those add a circuit plug in fuse thingys. It plugs in like a fuse and has a red wire coming off of it. Then you just place a fuse in the space they provide. You'll find it over in the fuse area of the store. It's pretty obvious what it is. I've got one providing power to a radar detector.

Also easy to remove if you change your mind. Use a small fuse though. Whatever the glove box light calls for. Probably 2 or 3 amp?

Thanks Gary

You read my mind. I was just going to post a question about what kind of jumper or plug I could use to get the 12V out of the fuse box. You answered my question - Thanks.

Will do - almost done

So far, two problems. (1) It's a booger to get the cover of that fuse box back on, (2) I should have realized that the two little bumbers on either side of the glovebox door keep the top edge away from the ledge behind it. So, I need the same size rubber bumper to push the light switch closed. I should have seen that one coming. But, I'll fab up something tomorrow.

Otherwise, the light it is and it works. Gives just about the right amount of light.

OK Got 'er done - tried pics, will try for better ones

It works. It also throws just about the right amount of light. It would have been perfect except for the need to put a little plastic button on the door to close the switch. It doesn't look bad, but I would have been happier if I hadn't needed to do that.

I took some pictures today, but they were really bad. I'll try again later using the close up mode and maybe a support for the camera. In low light it must be a real long shutter speed. My photos were pretty shaky.
