Moleskin Install on a 07 GT

Here's my take on installing MoleSkin that you can get at http://www.automoleskin.com/ford.htm for $30. A few small details were left out of the install instructions that came with the skin.

1. Remove the cover from behind the interior door handle.

This was the most frustrating part of the process. Using a small flathead you need to pull up/off the plastic cover. I found that starting from the top back worked reasonably well. I’ve included a picture of the back of the cover for reference on how it’s attached.

2. Remove the screw from the behind the door handle cover.

3. Remove the top screw from the side of the door.

4. Remove the corner panel (behind the mirror) from the door.

Use two hands to pull this piece off. Be careful to not pull the wires for the mirror adjustment.

5. Remove the plastic cover over the door lock.

This piece comes off easy, just use the flathead to push in the plastic connector.

6. Pull back the door panel.

This required some force. I found it easier to start from the inside where you pop off the corner piece. There is a lip on the top edge of the door panel, so you will need to pull up and out. Pull it back far enough to get to the window track, which is about a half inch down inside the door.

7. Pull out the window track.

Tack notice of how the track is installed before you remove it. Pull back one side of the door to start pulling off the track.

8. Cut the mole skin to size.

The mole skin comes in one long strip that you will need to cut to the right length for the track. Just lay the strip over the track to measure. I also noticed that the height of the mole skin was taller than the track. I used a ruler to mark off about a ¼ inch of the strip and cut that off.

9. Prep the window track.

I used some sandpaper to rough up the track, then wiped it down with some rubbing alcohol.

10. Apply the mole skin to the door.

Pull back a foot or so of the backing at a time and apply the mole skin to the window track. After the strip is on use your finger to make sure the mole skin is on tight.

11. Put the window track back on the door.

This is best done by starting at the back. Make sure to put the track back on in the correct position. There is a slight angle cut at the part where the track meets the corner.

12. Snap the door panel back in place.

Starting from the inside corner place the door panel back in its original position. You might need to use the palm of your hand to pop it back in place at the area around the lock.

13. Replace the screws on the door and handle.

14. Replace the corner piece, handle cover and lock covers.

These go on easier than they came off. I went ahead and cleaned the handle cover piece before putting it back.

That’s it. For both doors it took about an hour. I’ve had the skin for about a week now and it’s been great so far. No scratches.

Really no need to removed all that stuff, just 3 bolts and you should be able to pull out the wiper channel.

I'm going to have to give this a try and replace the durofelt I have on now. They claim it has better heat resistant adhesive than generic felt. Though summer is over and it's a non-issue for many months.

You would think it should work this way but, mine didn't. My Durofelt lasted the whole summer with no problems and then when it started cooling off a few weeks ago I started getting glue streaks! Nothing major and it wipes off with window cleaner but, I thought it was odd that it went the whole summer with no problems and acts up now that it's cooled off.

I didn't experience a 'heatwave' this past summer, but I too had started to get some glue streaks on a section of the drivers side window.

I used some Goo-Gone to remove the glue on the tint and on sections of the wiper channel where I saw the exposed glue.

I'm going to keep an eye on this. If it happens again, I may yank the Velcro off and switch it to Moleskin. No issues yet with the passenger side.
