Okay, I have been trying to find a way to get these red leather inserts put onto my door, but keep running into dead ends. I looked at my Ford store, but you have to buy the whole door panel and even with my discount, they're still over $300 a piece, since they just don't sell the insert part. I have also looked at upholstery shops around town, and no one wants to touch it and one place suggested I just paint it with vinyl paint! I don't want paint, I want the leather inserts... So, the questions I am facing now are, how hard would it be to just order a large leather piece and try and install it myself? Is that doable for an normal guy like me? I would think so, I would just have to take apart my door myself... Or, does anyone have any suggestions on where I could go to get this done in the Northern California area? Cause everyone I have been calling looks at me like I am from another planet... I know it can be done, cause on of the guys here had his done in white and looked awesome! So any suggestions will be helpfull... Please help me before I go completely insane...

This was brought up before, think the poster said shops wouldn't do it because there is no place to actually tuck the leather in. I don't see why you couldn't use some sort of adheasive to attach the leather but trimming it perfectly to make it appear tucked in would be tough.

The pleather inserts that came in my door appear tucked in but are probably just glued on.

Hey Jay, I'm with you on the door insert question. In the next 8-12 months, I am hoping to change the leather in my car from Charcoal, to a Katzkin Dk Charcoal, with Blue inserts, and also want to add blue door inserts as well to highlight the look. If you find anything out about doing this, please let me know.

If you already have leather and just want to change the insert color to red, why not dye it?

I don't have leather in the door panels right now, the red leather I have was installed after I got the car, so it's not OEM... Good news, I have actual leather, bad news, I didn't get the door panels...

Hmmm... I saw a door panel by itself and Bill's right, there really isn't any place to tuck the leather... That does make it a bit harder... I could hide it in the grooves though... I have chrome piping that I put in there now (to kind of dress it up) that I could put on top of the leather once installed and hopefully hide the ends better, depending on how it looked once in. I may just get a piece of pleather or vinyl and see if doing this myself is even possible... Somehow, I get the feeling I am going to have to end up getting the actual already installed door panels...

I think I responded to this before, but my shop here in FL did it along with my seats. There is NO way to take that panel off (I might have said there was before), but the installer just tucked/wedged the material in the gap and glued it all down. I did have to take it back the first time, 'cause it started to come unglued. But when I brought it back to get fixed the installer admitted he did not use the proper heat gun to seal the glue (direct heat vs. hot air or something). It's been a few months now, no problems. We will see if the FL heat does anything to it??

Maybe check out Katskin's site to get some installers in your area?

I am lost? Is there a difference in the door panel between the standard interior and the IUP interior? How does Ford get the insert on the door?

Luke,

Thanks for the info!

I just went to the site and there are a couple installers about 40 miles away, I'll give them a call and see what they say... I am crossing my fingers that these guys can help me out!

Steve,

The door panel on the standard (non-leather interior) door does not have the leather inserts, it's just plastic, like the rest of the door. As far as getting the insert on the door, I have not a clue!

Update:

I tried calling the Katskin installers and niether would touch it...

but, I did look up the website for Classic Soft Trim and according to their little flash demo, they can do it... Now let's hope the satellite installation center that's about 60 miles away can do it! I'll call them tomorrow to see... Check out this little demo, it shows they can do custom door inserts...

http://www.cstpackages.com/ford/mustang/

click onto components. Now, the question will be a) can this installation center do it that is near me and B) how much will it cost... I'll find out tomorrow.

Update #2:

Okay, I just got off the phone with the CST authorized installation center in my area and the good news is that they can do it! The bad news is that they are only setup to deal with dealerships, but since I work for a dealership, he's willing to work with me... So, he's going to look into the price and details and get back to me... At least this guy sounds like he knows what I am talking about, and that's a plus!

more updates on my quest to follow...

Just looked at the site. Looks like a place to contact when I get back to the States. Do all their locations only work with dealerships or do they have shops for private customers?

I would love to do this to mine as well, but with black leather inserts. Can't wait for the update on how it turns out.

I see you have the glassback. I remember you saying that they installed a prototype in your car for SEMA. Do you have any insight on when that will be available to the common folk?

I also will follow this insert quest. I look forward to hearing more on it.

I'll call my shop on Monday to try and get you a price comparison. Wouldn't hurt to see if you are paying too much......

I am not sure on this one... My guess is that since they are installation centers, they may be different from location to location...

Latest update:

Called this morning and found out they can do it without a problem. It's going to be a bit pricey at $500, but that's cheaper than getting the actual door panels from Ford and this seems to be my only lead at getting these panels, so I'll probably go with it... I will be interested in the price comparison from Luke's shop to see if this is a bit on the high side... I was assuming though that since this is a kit, it was going to be a bit on the expensive side... At least it can be done and it's cheaper than getting the door panels from Ford...

Yep. When I first started looking at this option, the hard part was trying to figure out which door panel I needed, cause there were several part numbers... Part numbers were all different depending on color trim and whether or not the leather inserts were on/off (and also what color leather) and whether or not the interior had the 500/1000 Shaker or basic stereo. So, you can order whichever panel you needed...

OK, just got off the phone and he said he would do it for $200-300. I thought your price was a little high, but not too bad. I think it's really worth it, regardless. You can get whatever color you want, and even suede if that floats your boat.......

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too... I thought it was a bit on the high side, but if this 'kit' that he's getting installs easier and is less likely to have problems, then it's definitely worth it... I thought about suede, but in the long run, I would probably just stick with the leather, I like that better... If I had suede in the seats, I would maybe lean that way, but I'll stick with the leather.

Thanks for checking with your guy about the pricing too! Man, I really need to make some friends in the leather/installtion business, parts and paint businesses...
