Garmin GPS Mounting Ideas Needed Please

I don't have my 07 yet but am thinking ahead on mods and such. I have a Garmin 2730 GPS and I am looking for ways others have mounted GPS units in their car. I plan to run a permanent power cord to the final location and I will have to run a audio cord to the aux input in the console so that it will play through the stereo system.

The unit has to stay somewhat portable because I use it on my motorcycle. Any ides or suggestions? Also any pics would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Bob

I don't know how the size of your garmin compares to my tom tom, but I used silicone cabinet door stops on the top and bottom of the unit and pressed it between the front glass and the dash.

This set up holds in cornering and acceleration. To get rid of glare, I use black construction paper as a 'visor.' I use the GPS in my van as well.

Here are a couple of pics of my setup. I used the mounts thst came with my Garmin Quest 2. I guess in California it is illegal to have anything stuck to the windshield, so Garmin included that black plastic disk in with the GPS. I stuck the disk to the dash, and the windshield mount suction cup stick to the disk. Works great! It has held up to powerful launches and hard cornering. I use the power point in the middle of the dash and the other wire coming from the GPS unit is an external antenna. I haven't wanted to drill any holes in the interior pieces to run wires yet, so I just bundled the GPS antenna wire with the sat. radio wires.

I realize you already have a unit, but take a look at: http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showthread.php?t=46204

No cords and totally portable. I can even use this setup to find my car in a big parking lot.

Thanks for the reply, that is a cool deal to have. I don't really want to buy another unit so I will have to stay with trying to mount my garmin. I also use the garmin on my motorcyle and it has MP3 and XM built-in.

Thanks

I don't know how the 2730 compares to the 2720, but ProClip does have a 2720 mount (see here.) You need to couple that with one of the Mustang mounts, like the one here. I've been thinking about this setup for my Nuvi, but I'm worried the clip would damage the IUP dash piece.

The 2730 is identical to the 2720 as far as size, the only difference is that the 2730 adds weather, traffic, & XM.

Thanks for the website for the mounts. I also wonder about damage to the surface. I may just stick to the garmin bean bag and not try to do anything too fancy.

Thanks,
Bob

I really like the friction-type mounts. They are portable- but VERY stable:

They also make one that you mould to your dash contour- but Ive had good luck with this one.
