Well, I took the stang to the dealer for some work (runs out of gas at 1/4 tank after having tank replaced). When I get back to work I get a call from the dealer saying that they can't get the car started. Then he asked if there was something about the alarm that they need to know. That's when I told them to push the button on the dash that says "engine start". The service writer says "oh, ok" in mild disbelief and we hang up. Have'nt heard from them since, so I guess they found it.

I take it you cut the starter wire instead of just stripping and tapping in to it?

That's a funny story.

Well, actually, I set up a toggle switch so that either the key or the button would work depending on where I had the toggle set. But, i forgot to switch it back to the key before I dropped it off. It was easier to tell them to push the button then to tell them where the toggle is located. (not easy to get to).

No, the key is still needed for the steering wheel lock and the tranmitter chip inside. I was in the habit of turning the key and continuing to crank to start the car. After I put in the button, I couldn't train myself to use it instead of the key. I just kept forgetting. I put in the toggle so I would have no choice but to use the button. I have a thing about using the mods I do to the stang. Once you get used to using the button, you really don't notice the difference. It's like driving a stick, you get so used to it, you don't really think about shifting. That is unless your putting it through its paces. While it is possible to make it work without the key, it would not be practical. Few cars, like the Prius and some high end cars, have a setup that works off of a fob in your pocket, but they have many safeguards built in. The premise of a key is theft deterrent. Cars designed not to use keys (like those mentioned) have other electronic deterrants in place. This explains it well. Prius
Even though I still need a key, I like my button.
