Finally a double din nav unit not from kenwood!
#21
Yes, I'm sure it does, but from the rumors the double din is going to come out in a few more months and probably retail for close to 2 grand. I really wanna see the specs of the unit regardless of the cost. But 2 grand is a bit much for me. I don't need the navigation at all, I'm pretty good with directions/map.

It turns out the only place that mentions the AVIC D2 is one line of test in an article on 12volt.com. It looks as though it very well may be a typo.
Yeh, the Kenwood is about 1200, BUT, a couple stereo guys I talked to told me that to actually have it work and sound the way its supposed to, will cost me anywhere from $3000-$4000. Thats a hard nut to crack. I am pretty bummed cuz I got a 500 expecting to switch out the stereo right away, and I cant afford that right now! Still researching all this, and looking around... I like the Pioneer systems...

I don't quite know why it would cost "$3000-$4000" to make it sound right. The only thing a bit weird with the kenwood is that the pre-outs are only pushing like 2 volts or something, which is pretty low. This goes to 8 volts if you buy the 5.1 decoder that costs like $500 or whatever.
I think I am leaning towards the kenwood at this time, that is unless the eclipse has satellite radio built in. I don't want a seperate unit for satellite radio navigation.

Double Din is the way to go. Real clean!! Navigation isn't the most important to me. Satelite radio and DVD are the most important. Not to mention picture quality. I definately would not buy without seeing one in a car with light hitting the screen. In the stores they don't have heavy light hitting them. From my own personal experiance, sunlight is a pain.

Yeah, there definately needs to be a side-by-side-by-side comparison of these. Double-Din LCD is definately the way to go for after-market stereo upgrades. Does anyone have a release date of the pioneer unit?

"Spring 2005"
Us at The Mustang Source should organize a group buy of AVIC-D1's. I bet we could all get a sweet deal. If we could get 10 people to commit...maybe I could use my reseller's license to become a dealer.

Count me in please.

Avic D1 is out now. It's the N1 series that is the double din. D1 has been out for about a year now and is being replaced and upgraded at the same time this spring. The update will be an addon module that gives the unit the nav system from the N1 series (and has the XM traffic).
Now since the D1 has no DVD video playback, the D2 is likely a real player. There is little to no info on any of these players. Pioneer is staying tight lipped - which makes no friggin sense since they showed them at CES in January. I read about it in TWICE.
So here we are. All waiting.
And Jess: tell that installer to F off. For $4000 you could get a serious system. You probably have enough now to rip out the head and just replace that and a harness. Down the road if you want more, start replacing speakers and amps. You can pick up one of the kenwoods for around $1100 if you know where to look, but that's not in a retail location (online places) so installers get leery about you bring stuff into their shops. You can pick up the nav version of the kenwood for around $1900.
Good luck to you either way!

Yeah we need more double din goodness. I think I am still going to get the Kenwood. The prices of the others are just a bit higher than the already high price of the kenwood. Especially since I don't want/need navigation.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse... the big thing about the new unit (d1) isn't navigation, it's that it shows you realtime traffic congestion. I commute to work and traffic means my ride is either 20-25 minutes or 1:20 depending on road conditions. Yes - it's that nutty! Having that realtime map show me what the travel times are at that moment is amazing! I too don't need nav, I've lived in this area all my life.

p.s. groupset -- you are of course correct, sorry - I got ahead of myself with the model names (brain ahead of keyboard).

Anyone have any info, esp. pricing or pics, on that new eclipse unit that 05passion mentioned?

Actually, I think the link we are looking for is this:
http://www.eclipse-web.com/products/avx/avx2494.htm
But I can't find it for sale anywhere, and it looks to be a 2004 model?

I just had the AVIC-D! intalled in my 05 Mustang GT last Friday night. I was told by the installers that this unit was the first one that was sold and installed in the San Francisco Bay area (according to the local Pioneer distributor). It took two installers over 5 hours to install the system. The most of their challenges was due to the fact that the 05 is so new, there are not a lot of parts available for it (e.g. wire harnesses, adapter/surround for the head unit, etc.). Also, it was their first time installing this system so their was a learning curve.
The system is awesome! I got it with the full nav set-up as well as the iPod adapter. I have the XM satellite tuner on order (it's supposed to come out later this month). The only issue that I have so far is that there are gaps around the top and bottom of the unit because there is no adapter for the unit for this specific car. The installer is custom building a custom surround adapter that will fill the gaps and make the unit look like it was from the factory rather than a bad install.
I'll post pics later today.
