Question Factory Nav worth the price tag?

I'm about to order a 08 Mustang GT and I'm debating over the Nav System option which would require me to get a GT Premium.

Is the Mustang Factory Navagation System really worth the $1,995 price tag? Other then the clean factory look, what it the advantage of the Factory Nav System over aftermarket navigation systems like the Pioneer D3 which cost more then $1,000 less .

If I don't get the Factory Nav I would just get the standard audio system in the GT Deluxe and install an aftermarket Navigation System.

Hey Edgar, its Jeff. I just got the D3 (haven't installed it yet). But for the money you can get one for, its WELL WORTH getting one aftermarket. Mine will play DVDs, and it has a digital iPod interface wnere the touchscreen turns into the iPod clickwheel. I say save your money and go the aftermarket route. You won't be sorry!

The factory option is over priced but works well, maintains the factory look and warranty and is not a theft bait.

The factory nav also has options for ipod interface, HD radio and sirrius or all of the above.

It also has a 6 disc internal Mp3 player

I have been very pleased with the touchscreen radio. If sticking with the factory options means nothing to you, the Pioneer may be a better value for you.

Also with the D3 you have ONE slot for both your music and your NAV software. You'll constantly be juggling discs.

To me that is a dealbreaker. The only Pioneer that overcomes this limitation is the Z2 (hard drive based NAV and music) and THAT costs a cool $2k.

IMO the factory NAV is a good deal for what you get.

Here's an AVIC Z2 for under $1200: http://www.cartronixplus.com/templat...20CN%2DNVD905U

For that price I think it beats the factory nav hands down.

If you want to compare discounter pricing, the Visteon nav unit can be bought for under $1500 new and under $1000 as new vehicle take off. Its only $2k if you pay sticker for the option from your dealer. Sticker on the Z2 is at or above the 2k point as well.

Does anyone know where I can get any details or specs on the Factory Nav system? I've searched online and can't find more information on it other then the small paragraph on the ford website.

You can not beat OEM look especaillay when it comes to resale. Had it in my BMW 530i and when driving the my GT without it, I realize the worth. It all depends on what you want, is the sticker plus the upgrade worth it, if not then go aftermarket.

Buy the Mustang without it, and if you really want the factory look, then get one off Ebay for $500 - $700 and put it in yourself. Save yourself $1000+.

Cheers

Art, the single slot is a downer, but for me (and alot of us who are installing the D3) CD's aren't used anymore, since I have an Ipod. And with the iPod interface cable, I can leave it in the glovebox plugged in and control the iPod from the HU. I'm sure alot of people will agree that they don't even have CD's in their cars anymore if they own an iPod.

If you get one Art, you'll love it! Once you use it, you will always carry it with you. Its IMO, the greatest invention for music.

Obviously you can get something cheaper than the factory unit. But I really like mine, it works great, preserves the factory look, integrated Sirius, etc. In fact we have two (wife's MKX has one too).

+1

FYI... I use both my ipod as well as the CD change. I thought I wouldn't like having to use the iPod, but you know what... that's what playlists are for. I select my playlist before I put the car in gear and then just enjoy the music. I really don't go searching for songs...the beauty of the ipod is that it only contains songs I like.

OK, maybe I'm just old fashioned, but the aftermarket nav I choose to use is printed (yes printed) by Thomas Brothers and only cost $35 at Costco. I grew up in an era when we learned how to use maps effectively. I've used all of Fords different nav systems since I work for a dealership, and I've been instructed on how they all work to make life "better," but I'll stick to a $35 map and spend that $2K on mods to make my GT faster.

I'm not going to BS anybody - my nav is a toy, and it looks cool in my dash. End of story.

Cheers

Same here Javier. Plus, my car is a show car, and it fits with the whole show theme.

I too am considering a factory nav for my 2008 i'll be ordering in the spring.

I have a Garmin StreetPilot 2730 in my Trailblazer that works great, but would love something built in.

My question is what about map updates? Who puts out the currrent maps? My Mustang will be strictly a summer car and I plan to have it many many years. 15 years from now will maps updates still be available for it? Something to think about...
