I just bought 2 of those Sharpie PAINT pen and I'll make some tests.

The texture wasn't great too much marks lefft by the tip, so went back the the sticker idea, you can now buy them for 10$.

What you guys are describing sounds an awful lot like what I do for my model airplanes. You can do a lot with an airbrush, but it takes a lot of practice. I'm still a novice.

Leo, about those paint pens, I also use them for my models. They will work, but I would suggest doing a really good masking job. If you've got the hands of iron (like mine) there's a better than even chance you will slip with the pen. And, the tip needs to be refreshed now and again by pressing it down. This can blot if you're not careful. Again, with practice it should work fine.
