Dressing up the doorsill (do-it-yourself)
Dressing up the doorsill (do-it-yourself)
Well, I had the paint from the switch plate project. Got "spray happy". Saw some threads on doorsills. Some photos:
- Door sill removed. Held by double sided tape and clips. Pretty easy to remove, pryed with my fingers the clip side, and nudged the taped side gradually until completely off.
- Sill of the car without the door sill.
- Some close ups of the door sill clips and tape.
- Finished product.
- Finished product installed (switch plate in view).
- Another pic of finished installed product.
I removed the old double sided tape and replaced with new one.
I have Windveil blue. The mustang lettering is colored with Dupli-Color Avignon Blue. It was close enough match for me. The number on the cap is C8800905.
I still have to do the driver side.

No problem, copy the idea, do it better.
The pain was in setting up for painting it. I spray painted. Could very well have done it with a paintbrush. Even easier, shop for color decals, cut to size and apply. As for the lettering, could buy the lettering (like PSH) have it colored (didn't shop around much for those, possibly lettering is available in stock colors somewhere).

For the lines, Krylon spray paint for plastic was used:
1. Satin White
2. Patriotic Blue
3. Red Pepper
Then I topped it all off with a clear coat sealant from Krylon.
You can go crazy with the colors, metallic red/white/blue, or your car's color. Dupli-color has a wide selection of auto colors.
I finally started on my driver side door sill. On the metal plate, the one with the MUSTANG lettering, I noticed some rust specks when I was cleaning the door sill. Is this normal? Anyone else's plate doing this? I didn't notice any on the passenger side (most of the action takes place on the driver side
). You can see the dot just below and to the right of the "S". Sorry for the poor quality, I didn't take a picture until I was inside and the sun had setted.
Before I apply my clearcoat, I will clean it thoroughly with a Q-tip dabbed in CLR.

The passenger side stripes, I used a plastic film (sticky on one side) then with an exacto, cut out the stripe, and spray painted. Repeated for the other two stripes. The preparation time for that was too much for me when I did the driver side. On the driver side, I spray painted into a container and used a small paintbrush to paint the stripes. Much quicker. A note: the spray paint dries pretty quickly in the container, so I had to renew the paint a few times.
If I did this again, I would use normal paint in a can and a paintbrush.

I will check underneath the door where it meets up with the doorsill.
