Black Vents on an IUP
#1
I like the look of the black vents with the chrome ring like Saleen does on their Mustangs and Ford is doing on the GT500.
Is it hard to change them out and can you buy just the blades or do you have to get the complete assembly?

I'm tempted to say pull them out and see if the blades can be removed. If so, get a can of Krylon and go to town.
It's been asked before, some searching might reveal some answers. It's definitely been done.

I'm pretty sure you can buy them from Kevin (05stangkc). I have seen others that have done it also. Not sure how hard it is.

You can appearently just pull them out and either paint them or buy the part from Ford.
I'm thing about doing this myself, although I have gotten somewhat used to the silver vents.

Thanks for the pdf file!
I hunted inside the forum with a search of 'vents' instead of black vents or dark vents and found a thread that talked about the parts from Ford are $90. I will have to find if there is someone out there doing a aftermarket IUP that would want a trade.

The IUP vent blades are silver
Saleen and the new GT500 change them out for the original black vent blades that are from the non-IUP dash
I think this will look sweet with the Dark IUP that I have on order...if the truck ever delivers it.

Chrome vents would look too gaudy IMHO.
I pulled a vent out last night, took a look inside. The vent blades are held in by a small pressure clip, they could be removed as a unit, shot with flat/satin black and snapped back into place. Think black goes better, as it mimics the look of the gauges - chrome ring with black inside. Now if I ever get around to doing it...

I bought a used set and swapped mine out. VERY easy to do. Here's a pic of the old vents after I pulled them out. It shows the tabs that hold them in.
Check out these 2 threads for the rest of the story if interested.

If this were free, or real cheap, I might buy the parts and switch them out to see how they look in person. But for $99, it doesn't seem quite worth it. Although kudos to you for a good comparison shot.

I'm actually looking to do something the exact opposite. I like the black look of the vent blades, but hate the chrome ring. When I bought my MGW parts I got them all in satin silver, so I'm trying to find a way to make the vent rings as well as the gauge trim silver as well.

Yes please. Another MGW thing for me to buy. You know, they could build the entire car and I'd buy it. Hmm... an antire car done by MGW in their brushed silver... nice.

Interesting, I wonder how you get it to come off like that. It would be perfect if I could get the pieces to come off, then I could yank that darn chrome off.
