Any experiences: DUAL XDVD8281 / Double-DIN in dash DVD

Has anyone installed this HU in their S197? They have it at BestBuy for $499.99 right now...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1168044601475

For another 29.99 you will get an adapter to connect external audio or video sources...

Any experiences?

Looks a little too flashy for my taste. Just personal opinion though.

Other than that, has anyone installed this HU in his car? Plan on doing it myself to save 200 bucks.... Just not sure how to override the parking brake contact...

For most units, if the parking brake wire is a single wire, just run it to ground. If it has the multi-wire setup, or requires multiple pulls of the parking brake, we'll have to get a bit fancier.

Haven't bought it yet, but according to the wire diagram, it looks like it's a single wire...

Where would I attach it to ground it "appropiately"?

For a couple hundred more you can get a Pioneer with GPS and iPod Interface or XM/Serius connector ...

Crutchfield often sells the Pioneer AVIC-D3 for $800-900. One of the best rated systems on the net, and priced great. I know CircuitCity sells their "open box" Avic-D3's for $800.

So where would I usually attach the ground wire?

You can splice it into the ground on the power harness, or just attch it to a screw behind the dash somewhere. I don't want to say for sure that will work and have you kill your new unit, since I'm not familiar with the Dual.

I just looked up what I could find. Try grounding it separately from the harness. If that doesn't work, we'll have to put a switch on it. Apparently the Dual doesn't use any super-complex scheme, so we should be able to work this out.

I found this for an earlier model. Apparently you have to ground/unground that wire 10-15X before it takes as permanent. Read this page.

@ Infinity:

Quote from the operation manual: "
When installing this unit, the installer must connect the parking brake detect wire (“Yellow-Blue Leadâ€) to the parking brake mechanism in order to make the parking brake lock-out feature operable. DO NOT simply ground the parking brake detect wire to a metal portion of the vehicle. Failure to properly install the parking brake lock-out feature could lead to driver distraction..."

I guess there not referring to driver distraction by the HU going up in flames... Thanks for your help!

Yeah. I can't claim it is a good idea for safety's sakes, but I always bypass on my installs. Since I no longer work at a shop, and haven't for 10 years, none of my installs can I be held liable for.

Finally bought and installed the unit yesterday and gotta say: I love it !

So much easier now to find an mp3, since it gives you a list with all track names instead of just searching for it one by one.

DVD playback works fine so far, but I did not attach the parking brake wire yet, my friend (who did all the soldering of the harness) is now trying to figure something out without using a switch, I'll keep you updated.

I read that you just have to connect and disconnect the cable to a good ground source about 10-15 times before permanantly grounding it, however, that did not work for mine.

I just bought a switch at RadioShack and connected it between the ground source (little unpainted screw next to the parking brake) and the radio. Now if the DVD doesn't play, I just hit that button 3 times and it works perfect.

I'm really happy with the sound quality, had to get used to the heavy bass at the beginning, but it just took some adjustments in the settings and now it sounds excellent.

The screen is really good quality, the only problem I had so far was tonight driving back from the car wash, when the sun directly hit it - but then again, I wouldn't have been able to see anything on the shaker display either...

In short: I'm reeaally happy!
