Hi Guys,

I have been watching with fascination all the exitement about the new car. I have a gorgeous 1994, Camaro Z-28, 6 speed with 280HP LT-1 5.7L V8 with T-tops.
I live in a Northern climate and to be honest the car is garaged and is a total toy. My favorite feature besides the rumble and the power is the Tops!!!
In the summer I feel like I have a structuraly safe and sound convertible and can do 80MPH on the highway reasonably comfortably and get a tan!!!
They dont squeak and they dont leak (car has been in the rain 3-4 times in it's life)
All I have heard is the 05 is so structurally strong. Why not a straight removeable Targa top across the whole roof that you can slide in the foldable trunk. This has to be a demand item especially to people in the south. I dont get it???

its only been in the rain 3-4 times, how do you know it won't leak?

First off, welcome to the site

Truth is, the targa/T-top/sunroof has been debated quite a few times here. I guess that there is no demand for T-tops on Mustangs. Feel free to roam around and do a search, I know the topics are around here somewhere.

I would absolutely wait and buy a targa or t-top if I knew that this option were to come out! Right now I am waiting for my WIFE to give me the go-ahead to order my new GT.

Ah! the joys of being Married! (Yes, I really love my wife!!!)

T-tops are retro-70's.

Do you REALLY want to go back to the days of the ~worst~ cars made in human history?

T-Tops were a compromise come up to replace convertibles which disappeared. Eventually a couple of cars got them right, but darn it, T-tops remind me of the Love Boat and the worst Trans Ams and disco and, well, you get the picture.

With "Glassback's" popin' up, targa's shouldn't be too far behind...

I had an '00 firebird formula w/tops (the car was driven and stored ouside in the rain and never leaked) and my favorite part about the t-tops is that they they were clear so they give cabin a more airy feel when they are on. Also when off they give an open air feeling with a bit more privacy than a convertible. Plus there were only an $900 option!

Should mustang have them? You know the designers had that in mind when you look at the concept but it didn't make it into production so it must just not be feasible.

They were cool in the 80's. Its like sunroofs too. For Mustangs, I would track down another 86 with T-tops in a second, but have no desire to put them on a modern car. It is just part of an automotive era. With moonroofs, again I would get one on just about ANY car I buy EXCEPT a Mustang. Its just a Mustang thang baby. In the Mustang community I have been with for years, the general consenus is that any stang with a moonroof has been butchered.

Kevin sums it up nicely.

If you want air, get a convertible. Or roll down the windows.

Would be nice if Ford could get the old '66 type floor venting thing in these newfangled jalopys... Winders down, no A/C on, and no floor venting makes for a hot car...

Ah well. A/C to the floor boards! Yehaw.

Mustang Thang...??? Sorry I have owned a couple of GT's ...Nicest was my 92 Titanium, stick with a Sunroof!!!....and with a production run of close to 200K in the first year I hope the designers are thinking Targa top in the future.....Maybe it's retro but I dont consider the C6 vette very retro.....The stang would be so perfect with a gorgeous removeable Targa top and we could have a safe wind in your hair car. Ever seen a 911 Targa...gorgeous....maybe 06-07...let's hope....comments???

Dont get me wrong, I loved my T-top 86, but I just dont see wanting to own a newer style car with t-tops. Since 94 the roofline has has a lot of curve to it, and sunroofs always look flat. At an event with say 100 stangs there will always be that ONE dude that put one on a fox 3/4 and will always get a from most. NOW, 87-93 cars had a very flat roof and a very busy style to it, and a lot of them got sunroofs and they are not as frowned on typically, and you see a lot of them, so its not as big a deal. Older 79-86's are few and far between to see at all anymore, but back then the aftermarket roofs STUNK and hardly anyone ever did them. That was prior to the cheap hp we have now too, you rarely ever saw a modded mustang back in the 80's. It really didnt get going untill about 89-90 when the stereos and custom hot rods realy began coming back again. It was all low-rider mini pickups from 86-94 as the 'hot' vehicle for youngsters to own. If you were "better off" you drove a 300Z/Mitsu 3000gt/RX7/supra. Restored 60's cars dominated through the 80's, allong with the original hot hatches like GTI's omni GLH's or even a lot of modified VW Bugs were still around. The Mustangs were all quite plain.

There is no provision for a retracting power moonroof on the short curved roof of fox 3/4 and the 05. The 'standard' in moonroofs is that they retract, and the better ones do so IN the roof of the car(cheap japanese cars with small roofs get the one that sticks way up above the roof of the car and looks silly). A 'pop up' is just not considered acceptable looking on a modern car, therefore they are considered poo for the most part as a mod. With all this new attention on ricer wings and huge fake scoops already for the aftermarket, Im sure a few ricers who go with V6 stangs instead of civics will surely chop the roofs for a $140 Pep boys pop-up and find alteeza tail lights in no time.

Let's see, I mentioned that T-tops are retro. Where do you get the impression that I want to add louvers?

Many cars had T-tops back in the late 70's and early 80's. For the last 20 years, however, most of those cars stopped offering them.

T-tops are retro. In a bad, bad way.

Next thing you know there will be people who want to bring back the K-car, the 55mph speed limit, and Quaaludes. ARGH!

Yea but if you had a choice, would you go "RETRO" 65-70, or 74-80, or 80-88? As far as I'm concerned, just about every car from 74-89 or so can just be scrapped. The vaccum cars, if you will. It was pretty dark times for hp cars untill the computer came along in full force and the habbit of sticking more and more mechanical emmisions controls to meet standards ended.

Is it just me, or does that thing look like a camaro?

Although, I really would like to see the GlassBacks. Kind of Targa, but better. I dont want a Vert. Everyone I know with one regrets having one... I dont want to put a sun/moonroof in it, I think it looks cheesy... But, I do love the idea of light from above.

Yah that car screams Smoky and the Bandit. I love T-tops and would much rather have them in my car than a hard top or even a convertible. Come on Ford!

I laugh at the statement that T-tops are retro in a bad way. I also disagree with it and wonder why you are such a downer....

That pic would reflect the 1978 King Cobra, one of the rarest Mustangs of the 70's. As much as the 05 reminds me of the 65/66 Fastbacks it also has a Mustang II feel to it IMO and that pic confirms it. Nicely done.

As for T-tops, I had two 83 models with them and both leaked like crazy. Every time it rained I could count on a wet driver's seat and this was in the late 80's so the cars were not that old. I paid close to $400 for new seals for one of the cars and it didn't help at all. I had several friends with the same problem and using silicon to seal them closed was the only answer they found. Maybe it was just a poor design, but I'll never own another T-top car.
