wheel offset on 18" wheels

Guys, I know the offset for the 17 x8 rims is 45mm. If you move up to 18x9 do you have to decrease the offset, say 40mm. I am assuming that if you just do 18x8 rims you keep the 45mm offset based on the width being the same. Appreciate the info before I purchase rims. Odering this Saturday, want dealer to do install that is why I am asking now.

A 45mm offset on an 8" rim is approx 6" of backspace... which would be 30-35mm offset on a 9" rim.

someone please correct me if im wrong.
