Started on my blank OEM grille (no fogs, no pony)

Well I've and complained enough about no one offering an OEM style grille w/o fog lights or the pony so I finally started trying to make my own. I've been getting discouraged lately because it's such a PIA so I thought I'd post some pics and ask for tips, advice, encouragement, etc.

I bought 3 grilles pretty cheap and started cutting.
First pic shows where I cut out the pony.
Second shows the patch pieces from another grille.
Third is just the patches laying in the hole.

Still a LOT of trimming to do just to get that first hole filled.

EDIT: Added 2 pics from an update I just posted. (post #8: 9/27/06)

Kind of looks like a jigsaw puzzle? I was thinking that maybe someone could take out the center pony, fill it in, paint it and add a running pony tribar emblem. I know that is not the look that you are trying to achieve but it's food for thought.

Sorry, IF (and that's a VERY big IF) I ever finish this one, I won't ever make another one.

Rich,
A jigsaw puzzle is the perfect way to describe this... except it's in 3D and I have to make each piece fit even though they come from different sides of the puzzle.

I've heard a rumor that the grille you described (a GT grille w/o a pony but keeps the fogs in the stock location) is in the works.

That's a LOT of work, Jason! So far, it looks like you're going to pull it off.

Here's some info I posted earlier about a similar-looking black grille, only billet, not honeycomb:

Black3v has one from Bash he posted a couple of weeks ago.

I almost broke down and settled for one of those, but then I started thinking how they're on so many trucks and other cars. That "look", even though it's similar to a '66 Shelby, is getting "tired", IMHO.

Found out last night I need a special kind of adhesive for this plastic. Going to borrow some from a friend and try it out.

UPDATE:
I've only worked on this a couple of hours (if that much) over the last few months. Pretty much given up on it. Just spent a few minutes doing a little grinding and tried to put the center pieces in place. Thought maybe I'd be able to "glue" those tonight... nope. Some of the angles aren't exactly perfect so one piece has to twist to mate up with another making it not fit with in some other spot.
Anyway, here are some pics I just took by taping the pieces in place to see if it would even be possible to "glue" them in.

As an alternative I'm thinking about painting the pony flat black and putting the smoke covers on the foglights just to black everything out. My biggest complaint is my Roush front fascia already looks a little busy or cluttered with the fogs and pony. Then If I add stripes it'll just be too much. A little over the top for my taste.

I dont know if u tried this or not but maybe try cutting the hole square or cut the whole section out completely. It will help for makeing it sqaure instead of trying to piece it in. did u finish?

The problem with that is I'm limited by the amount of material I have to put in the hole. I'm having to use honeycomb from the other grilles. For the center section, I used honeycomb from above and below the pony from another grille. I had to use those sections because the center of the grille comes to a point. That was the only way to match that "point" in the center.

As for the fog light holes, They're so big, there just isn't enough material to cut the hole into a square, i.e. a bigger hole.
Thanks for the idea though. I need all the help I can get.

Progress? Haven't even touched it since I took that last pic.

have you tried using a V6 grill? I don't know the differences shape wise between the GT and V6 but looks like it would be less work involved.

Yes. That's actually the first thing I tried. The V6 grille is smaller. It could probably be made to work, but I didn't like how big the gaps were on the sides. Also would have had to rig up some way to make sure it was secure because the mounting tabs are in different locations... even though Ford had unused tabs on the bumper cover where the grille tabs could be inserted once you cut out the holes in the unused tabs. Looks like the initial plan was to have the grilles be interchangeable.

And on a side note, the honeycomb pattern on the V6 is smaller than the GT, but on the V6 pony package grille they are much larger. Not that any of that matters.

Thanks for helping out Leo. That's a V6 grille though.
Removing the pony was actually the easy part compared to how hard removing the fogs will be.

That's a nice look. I assume you will be getting one after your long search! Nice ride btw, I saw it in Homewood in September. I lived in Dothan for a while in 11th and 12th grade. Circle city!
