Post Spoiler removal

Like many others I prefer the look of the Mustang without the spoiler. So I tried to remove the Pony spoiler from my black convertible yesterday. I've had the car less than a week, but I can't leave well enough alone! Anyway, I remove the four nuts from the studs at either end, and thought she would just pull off. Uh-uh! There is something resembling double sided tape holding it in the middle. If you lift the one edge of the spoiler up, you can just see a piece of "shim" I'll call it, holding down the middle. I'm sure it's there to prevent the spoiler from vibrating against the deck lid. Problem is, it must have some kind of industrial strength adhesive because it does NOT WANT to budge! I'm afraid it would pull paint off if I pulled any harder. So I'm asking if anyone has any experience or suggestions about my first "mod". In the meantime, I'm gonna move on to the next mod----shortening the antenna!
Thanks, Glen

3m

Try some 3m adhesive remover, it wont damage paint and if it is the dbl stick tape holding this will help it release and then you can use the remover to get the remaining glue off deck lid....One question! what are you going to do about the 4 holes in the deck lid?

Ah yes
The four holes.......
Well I have a TR6 that use to have a luggage rack on the rear deck. I removed that a long time ago and filled those holes with black rubber plugs that don't look out of place at all. So I will probably do the same. They will be even less noticeable on a black deck lid.
Thanks for the removal advice

heat gun! thats what I did. ok so I used the fiancee's hair dryer same difference. Then you need to use a buffing wheel with a rubber wheel, and a buffing solution. Took a while and I was using my body shops tools. Ford should have used one sided tape on the spoiler and not on both sides, what did my decklid ever do to them?

Please be VERY careful! A Heat Gun is NOT the same as a hair dryer! A heat gun can get MUCH hotter than any hair dryer and WILL burn your paint if you are not very careful.

I reccomend that you use dental floss or a light fishing line to cut through the double sided tape. Once you have the wing off, use "Goo Gone" to remove any tape or adhesive that may still be attached to the trunk lid.

I was careful I checked the car with my hand and if it got hot to the touch i went to the other side. It's all good. And I was j/k that it is the same thing. I could have used a heat gun and chose not to.

If you do use adhessive remover from 3m, goo gone, or goof off, make sure you read the label for the type of things that it will remove. I think goof off is the lethal one that will strip certain types of paints off anything

I've read of removing lettering on a Kawasaki gas tank using the fishing line/dental floss method. Maybe a combination of heat (not TOO much) and the fishing line will do the trick.
I just can't understand why Ford wanted this thing so stuck down.
Thanks for advice guys.

Careful or you'll dent your decklid like I did.

A body shop will do it for you which in some cases would be the best bet, they damage it the fix it without charging you, and they most likly won't mess up your paint, decklid or spoilerr if you take it to a reputible place

You are talking about the new style 07 spoiler i am guessing?Well, maybe this will help.I did this awhiles back. There is no logical way to get to it with fishline i felt becasue of the fin design.I used a plastic scraper and lots of elbow grease. This might provide a good insight as to your stick points.Good luck

Nice pic Bandit, that looks like what I have.
But mine seems to be loose at either end, and stuck down hard in the middle. Maybe a body shop might be the safest place to go!

My '07 V6 Pony spoiler came off with no problems for me ... just a little tug and off it went. But then again, the freezing temperatures (< 0*F) might have helped, when I did that.

It was pretty cool outside when I tried mine. Maybe I should have pulled harder, but I was afraid PAINT was gonna come of with it. Maybe the guy that built my Pony was determined it wasn't going to come off, and laid down some industrial strength adhesive.
Well I have news for him: it IS coming off, somehow.

I can't blame you for wanting to get rid of that spoiler.. The new 07 V6 ones are seriously ugly. I am so glad they didn't have those in 06.

As the other guys say try some strong fishing line.. the spider line stuff should work well.

I don't think it's ugly, I just like the look of NO SPOILER. IMHO, it still looks better than those raised ones they had prior to '07. Those ones look like the ones you'd find on Hyundai Elantras.
Not that there is anything WRONG with a Hyundai Elantra........
BTW, I STILL haven't got mine off yet. It is stuck down so hard, I'm afraid I'll pull paint off.

ok, here is a tip, or a bit more info for ya. As mentioned a hair dryer works great for removing the 3M tape. Now, I see you are afraid to remove it and that it may damage the paint. Don't worry, it won't. Park you car in the sun for an hour with the bolts already removed. That will heat up the tape. Take your hair dryer and heat up the base of the mounting area on one side (ie: drivers side). While heating it up pull up in the spolier directly above the area you are heating. Once it breaks free do the same thing to the other side. Once the spoiler is off try removing as much of the adhesive "bulk" as possible. Once you have removed most of it move the car into the shade. Once it cools off apply goo-gone to the adhesive and let is sit for 5 minutes. Use a soft cloth (not paper towels) to remove the adhesive. You will find that you may need to keep applying goo-gone until it is all off. Once it is all off you need to clean the area with soap and water to get all the goo-gone off. Then wax the area and you are all set.

Now I know you already mentioned you don't like the spoiler but are you sure 4 plugs in the trunk lid would look better???
