What are two long black strips on the roof? Can they be painted to match the car? Why are they there. As I look across the parking lot here at work (I'm on my break) B) I see that generally the more expensive cars don't have them.

Thanks

They are drip rails that channel away the bulk of the water so it doesn't end up right in your lap when you open the door. I know we all get some water when we open the door, but it would be alot worse without these channels.....

Just walked outside to take a look, my bosses BMW 5-series has them.

I actually feel the same way about them. It's one of the reasons that I'm leaning heavily toward getting a black GT. I'd love to get silver, but those strips on the roof bug me.

Ya they look out of place on this car, however, DON"T PAINT THEM. They are rubber. There is nothing you can prep this type of rubber with that will make the paint stick. It may last a few weeks but then it will start to crack and chip off. Don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise!! I know there are products out there that say they work but they DON'T.

Ok thanks guys. I will say my POS Taurus has these strips painted (sorry no pic, but probably couldn't post it now anyway). The Taurus also has painted mirrors: another issue I have with the Mustang. I suppose chosing Black would fix everything, but it gets darn hot in GA.

The Strips on Your Taurus were made of a Different Material. The Strips are there to Eliminate having to Finish Where the Welding of the roof and Quarters Meet, as well as Providing Drip Protection. Almost Every Modern Car on the Road has them now. Some are Painted, Some are Black. It is a Very Euro-Modern Touch, but it saves on Costs of Labor, and I think they Look Great! The Channel they provide in the Roof Gives the Cross Section of the Roof Pillar A Lot of Rigidity Too!

These Strips were a Big Sore Spot with my Dad, back when the 89 Thunderbird SC's came out. He Hated them so much, that he refused to buy one even though he loved how the car drove. Although the ones on the 05 Mustang are Recessed into the roof and the T-Birds were mounted on top of it.
