Repairing cracked side or rear louvers
Repairing cracked side or rear louvers
I have a set of MMR ABS rear window louvers that cracked in two spots at the lower slat. I checked on have a plastic repair shop doing the work and the cost would of been $100 at the minimum. Too much. I would of thrown them away before paying another $100 just to have them on my back window.
I was watching the 5 second ultraviolet demonstration on that product and got an idea. If that would hold it in one place, then I could do the plastic welding myself. Getting it to stay in one position so you could weld it was the problem. I do a lot of soldering, so I took a flat heating tip and my 80 watt soldering iron and went to work. I ordered the plastic repair rods off eBay.
Once the glue bonder tacked 3 spots on each of the broken bars, I took my iron and slowly heated a V into the cracked area. From here, I melted the new rod and filled in the channel I made. I smoothed everything out evenly, and gave it some light texture. It seemed to work well. I did the other one and tried flexing the louver. It held great. To play it safe, I then took the glue and ran a bead around the whole thng and did the UV treatment. Hard as a rock now and better than new.
The one I used is Laser Bond. Not 5 Second or Bond X as those don't seem to harden as well as the stuff in Laser Bond kit. Anyways, it made for a simple easy way to spot weld, that worked perfectly, making a full weld possible. I like the stuff.
