Question For The Stripe Folks?

Probably a thread somewhere about but I'm going to ask anyway. If I have painted stripes with 1.5 inch gap and 10 inches on each side are they consistently that size from nose to tail?

Depends on what you want. Check out the sticky thread about stripes, it has a spreadsheet with a bunch of different pics, tapered, non-tapered, etc.

If you have them painted, you can make them whichever looks best to you.
IMO, the curves of the new Mustang, especially the hood, make the tapered stripes look really bad. The stripes that are consistantly the same width from front to back look better.

However, if you want the original '65 Shelby dimensions, then yes, THOSE were tapered. (see pics below) For my taste, though the best looking measurements on an '05+ Mustang are 10.5" stripes with a 1.5" gap.

Well I went through the stripes thread and found this car with the actual Shelby measurements from 65/66 and it looks pretty darn good IMO!

Mine is currently in the paint shop as we speak. I had the BSM 10" stripes with a 2" gap. The gap looked too big for my taste and the stripes too narrow, so The painted stripes are 10.5 and the gap will be 1.5. (you have good taste Stangnut). My vinyl installer was a big disappointment (not BSM's fault). I think I'll love the painted stripes.

You'd have to find a picture that shows the hood from a little higher view. One that looks like you're standing in front of the car. (since that's the way most people will be looking at your stripes anyway)

I have the Vista Blue car with the authentic Shelby dimensioned stripes. Check out my sig for a link to more pics. I will have to get a pic that mimics what Stangnut is alluding to.

When I decided to get the car, I wanted to get Lemans stripes, maybe 12" with 1.5" or 2" gap. However, I found the Kaenen hood and had to have it. I saw a car with the RKSport hood (similar to mine) with wider stripes and it looked awful...the stripes didn't line up with the scoops at all! I found the very same picture that Stangnut posted (BTW, the 1967-1968 Shelbys did not have uniform stripe dimensions - most dealers used the 1965-1966 dimensions). I taped those dimensions out on the hood to see if it looked good. I liked the look and gave that same picture to the body guy when he painted the stripes. Let me tell you, with that hood, they look perfect! The reason behind the taper is to make the stripe "appear" to be uniform all the way back when looking from the front.

I can't say for sure that the tapered stripes would look good on the stock hood, but they look sharp with the Kaenen hood. Check out the spreadsheet as I believe someone else used the tapered dimensions on the stock hood. I any event, take the time to tape out all options on the car before you make a decision.

From the spreadsheet, the following use tapered stripes that are traditional dimesions or close to it.

Thanks guys! I would hate to pay lots of money to have stripes painted on my car only to think the dimensions look like crap.

Here are some more pics that show the tapered stripes. Note that the stripes are 9.25" wide at the front of the hood and 10.5" wide at the back of the hood. The spacing is a constant 2".

I hope so, painted stripes are a whole lot harder to take off. I've been thinking lately of going with BSM's 12" Antique White with the 2" gap on a stock hood but first I'm looking at some rims. Post those pics when you get your baby back!

I went with 10.5" performance white stripes with a 2" gap on my VB GT. No taper.

Love them!
