I just bought a set of hood pins, and am having some second thoughts about drilling the hood. Just curious what everyone else here at TMS thinks about putting hood pins on a stock hood.

I know the stock hood is heavy compared to aftermarket hoods, and there isn't as much hood lift @ higher speeds compared to aftermarket hoods. But they sure do look good.

If you want pins and don't need them to function (ie stock hood) - then IMO the "stick on" pins are just as "functional" as the real ones...or should I say nonfunctional?

 

Who says you don't need them to function on the stock hood? Plenty of aftermarket hoods can use the stock latch as well.

Nothing wrong with a little extra security for either. Looks great too, as long as they're functional. Whether that function is backup security or primary.

I ordered pins, drilled holes in the crossmember and then sold them before drilling the hood. I will definately be getting them again and finishing the installation. I am sick and tired of the hood lifting when I am on the highway. Now that I have the shaker you can see 1 section where the hood is starting to buckle a bit because of this terrible design flaw.

 

I sold mine because I couldn't bring myself to drill those big holes in the hood. Now I have added a Roush hood scoop and it required holes to be drilled.

 

For safety and what not, I MIGHT consider them sometime down the road. But honestly, I don't really like the way hood pins look on the outside.

Lets just say I wasn't feeling like the smartest guy when I first started this thread.

 

There were some great posts a while back detailing how to install, things that you should know if you decide to do it. Like using a dot of red paint to mark the spot on the underside of your hood. Using tape to keep the metal filings from embeding in the paint, using a foam "gasket" to protect the paint/hood when you put the round part on the hood. etc.... Try a search if you decide to install.... Checking my file they were posted by vegasjay and 38 special.

 

Stock hood - No, I wouldn't bother. And BTW, the stock hood was MUCH lighter than my Ca. Dream aftermarket hood.

Aftermarket - Absolultely. I didn't even feel safe until I put pins in my hood. It shook like it didn't like being part of my car. Check out the instruction thread for some great step-by-step instructions.

If you only want the looks, then why not the stick on ones? They look just as good, you don't have to drill, and they are removable. Just be prepared to take some ribbing from those who only believe in functional stuff.

 

The stock hood is not that heavy, I bet not too many aftermarket hoods will be lighter.

I think if you go aftermarket there may be a need for them but with the stock, to me it's just "rice". But if you really dig the look go for it.

 

We put on the RK Sport CD hood and haven't noticed any hood shake up to about 80mph. Can't really afford another moving violation so I haven't gone above 80. We will do the hood pins at some point only because my wife loves the way they look.

 

I too feal un-easy about drilling into my stock hood, but I did find black hood pins, aluminum as well, since the hood is aluminum, Black posts, black hood plates and black torsion pins with stainless rings, I ordered coated lanyards from Summit and the Black Pins from Performance Bodies.

I will take pictures when installed. I think they will look cherry with the Black Shelby stripes I plan to paint on the car.

 

Hey John have you taken a look at an '06 hood? Mine is rock solid and I'm wondering if they changed something between the years...?

If it were me, I'd do it if I were having problems with the hood coming up at certain speeds- maybe even try to find an alternative to keeping the hood from flying off, otherwise I'd leave it alone. But that's just me

Hood pins and Mustangs are classic, they have a history together!

Anyways, I dig the looks and the fact that my hood will no longer look as if it were floating on my car while driving on the freeway, has made up my mind.

So this comming weekend it is! I'm going to "rice" out my ride
