Painting rotors

Hi folks...

Rotor painting. Let's say, someone just paints their rotors with G2 or high temp paint or such, and didn't worry about taping off the 'swept' sections, just did the outer edge with some spillover and same with the hub. Then they stuck the rotors back on the car, and drove around like that.

Obviously something would have to happen to the paint. Is it like when the rotors surface rust, and it just gets knocked off, or is it more like it'll gum up in the pads, or...?

Thanks!

Even if you powdercoat a disc, the paint will come off. If it's G2, it won't gum up the pads, it will melt and dissapear.

I guess the other question is, why would you do that?

I didn't have a whole lot of trouble masking off things and using a brake paint kit. The paint has been on there for a couple of years now. I just cleaned the dust off the other day and there are no chips or bare spots.

Not yet... still debating the idea, and of course, the weather completely sucks, and there's a lot goin' on, and I broke a nail, and I need to shave, and the laundry needs doin', I've not had my breakfast, I gotta go to work tomorrow, I can't miss this special infomercial later today, I'm out of bubble gum and my shoe's untied.

When I get all that figured out, I'll probably do it then.

You can paint your rotors, put them back on the car and the pads will scrape away the excess paint. The recessed areas, slots and holes will remain painted. S197 (Nick) did this at a friend's house without any adverse affects. DON'T OVER PAINT THEM THOUGH!

When you say... well, ok, shout... 'Don't overpaint them'... what does that mean exactly? Or more to the point, why?

It needs the paint it needs... But I don't go all "I need 40 cans for one rotor, dawg!" That's silly.

...'cause usually it's only 34ish cans.

I think he meant don't over paint them where the pads will make contact?

Im in San Antonio.....just drive it over here and Ill paint them for you.
I dont really understand all this cause you can do it easy cheesy
without gettting a drop of paint on the surface of the rotor.

Wheather? yesterday was gorgeous. Just bring the paint and some bud Lite w/lime!

Here in Houston it's awful. It's just been wet... hell, the fog won't go away. It's *weird*.

And unluckily enough, when the weather's nice... I've had to work.

See, there it goes raining again... dangit...

Also, I refer you to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and...le_Maintenance
...and ask you substitute 'Motorcycle Maintenance' with 'Whatever The Heck houtex Is Wanting To Do, Including Motorcycle Maintenance, Farkle Application, and Awesome's Modifications."

/or to put it shorter: I wanna do it myself. It's just something I like to do when I can.
//That and I ain't got the wherewithal to get to SA at this time...
///Ah yes... time... wonder where it goes sometimes...

Because they're rusty at the hub and edge. I'm not a fan of the rusty look... Whatever Ford put on them, it's not enough.

I painted my rotors with Ford Red engine enamel and i did not cover the rotor, and i ended up painting the hub too and all the paint on the rotor face just came off after a good autobahn run on the texas highway

Exactly - I don't like the rust on the edges and around the hub. Going to paint mine during the holidays hopefully.
