Painted stripe question
Painted stripe question
I want to put stripes on my car after the conversion is done. Initially I was considering vinyl, but have decided that painting is the way to go (based on the posts that I had read)
The body shop manager at a local Ford dealership (they are also painting my front and rear bumper and hood) told me that they can paint stripes on my car for about $625. From what I read that's a very reasonable price.
Heres the part that I'm not sure about. He told me that when they paint the stripes on they will clear coat them and about 2 inches over on either side. Is this the way it is usually done?
I was under the impression that you would need to clear coat the entire surface panel where the stripes are painted ( ex. whole hood, roof, trunk, etc.)
Are there any problems with having it done that way?
Thanks

They should clearcoat the the entire panel that the stripes are painted on. Also you might check and see if they plan on color sanding the stripes so there is no ridge or transition from the stripe to the other paint. When it comes to paint work I find that you usaully get what you pay for.
My stripes much more then that. When they did mine they basically dismantled the car to do everything. It came out great!

Thanks for your input guys.
Are the stripes on your cars tapered at all?
Mayito514,
No, I have not seen any cars that have been striped by them. Though, to be honest, there aren't that many cars in my area that are striped to start with. Those that are seemed to be vinyl stripes.

mine were done by removing panels, wet sanding the entire panel, apply stripes wet sand, clearcoat, buff. $2k for stripes. its a little higher than the usual 1500-1800 i was quoted by some shops, but this guy was a mustang guy and very reputable.

We always do stripes so that you cannot feel them but I have seen some stripes that you could break a finger nail on the tape edge because they didn't do the entire panel. If you have ever seen Doug from Bama Chips Roush, we painted his car and you cannot feel the stripes.
My advice....don't let a production shop do it unless you know them and know they care about what they do and will do it right....otherwise have a specialty shop do it...might cost you a little more but how many times do you want to have this done?
This is the correct way to have it done. I was quoted $2800 to 3000 everywhere I asked and finally found a shop that did them for $1800. Of course I live in Kalifornia where most shop rates are $80 to $105 per hour.
Saw a couple cars with painted stripes last summer for display/sale. Talked to the owner of the shop and he quoted $2,000 to have mine stripped the same way. They were going to remove the hood/trunk/rear bumper/spoiler/front nose.

Looks like the idea of painted stripes for me have gone in the furnace, literally. I got the not so great news today that I have to replace my heating furnace
. There goes a quick $1800. Luckily my step-daughters husband has a H&C business so I'm getting it done at a good price considering.I may have to get vinyl stripes now...maybe keep them on a year and go for painted stripes next year (with next years tax refund). Right now I'm wishing that I hadn't gone and bought new rims and tires, as I really didn't need them....wifey has reminded me of that on more than a few occasions
Guys, thanks for your advice. Without it I would have had the stripes done for $625 which probably wouldn't turn out the way I would want.
Your cars look great guys! I really like your color choice of your stripes in relation to the color of your cars.
I am strongly considering blue as a stripe color on my silver car. Too many with the black and silver stripes combo.
Just a thought ...
I've been looking into the same thing and I know that one of the local (Phoenix area) vocational high schools will paint stripes on for the price of materials only. The program is NATEF/ASE certified and all students are supervised by ASE certified instructors with industry experience. I'm a teacher at one of the high schools which feeds students into their program and I've personally toured their facilities.
You might want to check and see if you can find a similar situation in your area. I hope this helps.

Now that is something I never would've thought of. Theres a county vocational school in my area, about 10-15 minutes from my house. I'll have to check with the school. Thanks for your idea Kris
