Moss black billet grille installed!

6 Attachment(s)
This is the grille, made by Carriage Works: http://www.mossmustang.com/Shop/View...eIndexID=58656

By using the supplied brackets, the grille will not sit as flush with the bumper as pictured in that link, but rather as deep as the OEM grille. I had to adapt the brackets and change their mounting location, in order to bring it out a bit more. I'm more than happy with the end result and I think it's the best black billet grille on the market so far :nice:

Looks great, I love black billet grilles. Thought about adding a pony to the grille?

TakeOffStang 6/28/07 11:51 AM

I like the looks of that.:nice: No emblem please ...........

Nope, no emblem whatsoever. I'm going for a "less is more", blacked-out look.

Here's another pic. If you're wondering about that headlight, here's the story: http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showthread.php?t=66678 . A replacement is on its way already.

kh765 6/28/07 12:01 PM

Sounds good to me. It still looks awesome. :nice:

2L8IWON 6/28/07 12:15 PM

Looks good but sounds JUST like the CDC grill we threw on my buddies car. he actually had wear marks on his bumper from the previous grill where the billett grill came up short.

stoic21 6/28/07 12:41 PM

Is there an option to keep the fog lights behind the grill? I thought in the other thread someone said that mounting brackets came with it.

ShowGT 6/28/07 12:44 PM

Nice grille, the loss of the lights in the grille is what I can't justify here.

I haven't tried it, but apparently yes.

Can you tell what's the look I'm going for? :-D

I want a black billet that retains the stock fogs as they are, not behind the grill... :(

Willl you be trying, I really would like to know the opinion on the loss of light, and a pci with the fog lights on and off

Anyway, it looks GREAT, I really like the extra airflow it looks like it gives to your motor over the stock one.

kevinb120 6/28/07 02:04 PM

There's plenty of room, but no provisions to mount the fogs. With the HIDs, you can't even tell if the fogs are on or off anymore.

May want to try for a pic out of direct sunlight in the shade Louie.

I wasn't using the fogs anyway, it's illegal to drive with them on here, unless the visibility is less than 160'. After I find a suitable pair of foglamps for the lower grille openings, I will attempt an install. I already know I'll need the SSE wire extentions from their center fogs grille.

Speaking of extra airflow, I noticed the hood fluttering at speeds as low as 65-70 mph this morning. I need to find a solution for this too, something that doesn't involve hood pins. I have adjusted the rubber stops and I also have hood struts, but I need something to hold down the front corners of the hood.

kevinb120 6/29/07 08:55 AM

I was concerned about this too and was trying to find if anyone had an uncureable flutter issue with the CDC or other complete grille replacements specifically. Mine is fine now at least to 120mph but I was worred once I open the entire grille up if it has an issue. Someone should make a baffle of some sort to block off the upper 3" of the grille opening. If there was a good how-to on how to get the fang twist-locks installed I would put those in a second though(now THATS something someone needs to do in billet rather then coat hanger hooks). I just don't want traditional pins. I love the ones on the KR concept. I got the grille out of the box today, and after a 30 minute un-wrapping session, its a beautiful piece.

Well, I tried something after remembering having read it in the Service Manual. The hood latch is attached with 2 screws to the cross beam. I loosened them and what do you know, the whole latch slides down by about 1/8"! Apparently Ford thought of this and made the holes in the beam oval for this very purpose. I even took the car on the highway again and there's no shaking or fluttering anymore, even at 120 mph!

I attached the relevant page from the service manual. I didn't have to remove the grille or the front bumper as recommended, I could access the screws through the grille. I doubt however the same can be done with the OEM grille on, but it's very easy to remove it.

kevinb120 6/29/07 01:48 PM

whew! As soon as I have time off I will put 'er on... I ordered the lower black billet insert to match as I am about to put on a chin spoiler and wont be able to easilly remove the pieces under the bumper once its on. It's on backorder though.

kevinb120 7/3/07 08:42 AM

Well here's a couple quickies of mine. I will paint the area behind the grille ultra-flat black and take some more pics with the Cervini GT500 splitter(don't get me started on that thing :shame: ) and the matching lower grille. Other then everything behind it being silver, it looks awesome. Got rid of the overbite look. I had slight scuffs from the front of the stock grille that go deep into the clear. I cleaned them up with some velvet cut compound by hand and you can hardly see it, but will have to wetsand and buff it out when I have time. The lower edge of the grille is about 3/16" behind the originals lower flange, and I tried to match the exact angle of the headlight upright trim, so its only recessed about 3/8"(had to use 1/2" spacers on the upper brackets).

kevinb120 7/3/07 09:18 AM

Silver fins typically 'pull' the depth perception to the outer edge of the grille where black is much more finicky. Plus, someone taking flash pictures of any grille will yield undesirable results...

Louie 7/3/07 12:27 PM

Looks great, Kevin! :nice:

kevinb120 7/4/07 10:46 PM

I painted the area behind the grille flat black today(dupli-color standard flat black) and it looks 1000% better. I painted all areas back there, including the last 1/4" of the bumper cover opening so the old grill's mounting tabs are also flat black, horns and other accessories as well so it all matches. I should get the lower grill tomorrow and get it on this weekend. That near-chrome radiator and lines were driving me crazy. Looks friggin evil now.

:dancedood:

ShowGT 7/5/07 01:03 AM

Nice piece, well done fellas.

I HAD TO!

kevinb120 7/5/07 02:16 PM

Its poo poo weather here today cloudy and drizzles. Although its when the old 'chrome' radiator looks at its worst other then strong sunset light(which everything looks awful in), so I'll grab a shot, and one from a distance...

EDIT: tried to get some photos but you can't see the stuff behind the grille anymore unless you walk right up to it. What a difference, before in the same conditions it wouldn't look like it even had a grille at all...And yes I hate my front tag too, but got pulled over 3 times in the first 2 weeks I had it, and that was before illegal tinted windows. May need to get a cover that is just slightly smoked.

That looks great! Did you have to remove the entire original grill? Did you have to cut out a section in the original grill? I was looking at the Shelby C6 grill. When I did some research they said I had to cut up the original grill to make theirs fix. I thought that was pretty hokie coming from Shelby my lord get a clue :screwy:

C6 below:

Did you drill your bumper? According to the instruction that you have to drill in the core support. Is drilling necessary or you can attach this w/o drilling?

You have to drill 2 holes in the plastic bumper cover and 2 in the radiator core support for attaching the brackets.
I guess it would however be possible to come up with another way of doing it (welding the brackets, etc.), but I don't think it's possible with the supplied hardware. My suggestion would be to purchase the grille and figure out your own way of installing it, before you drill any holes. If you don't like it you can always sell it :nice:

Nope, this is a full replacement grille, i.e. you remove the OEM grille from the bumper and install this one, using its own attaching means.

The CS6 grille that requires butchering the OEM grille is indeed a weird choice for Shelby. :shame:

NOICE! That's what I would hope everybody does with their overlays. Very nice.:nice:

Falchion 7/6/07 08:21 AM

Those billet grills look great on both your cars! Thanks for posting the pics guys! :nice:

That's something to consider for a future upgrade!

kevinb120 7/6/07 09:02 AM

No worries on drilling the bumper, the holes are well under where the stock flange goes should you put it back. Its so thin under there you just barely push through with a small awl, no need to bother drilling. You then use the back up clips under the cover to give it some support. The two holes in the radiator support are forever covered by the radiator cover as well so you never see anything returning it to stock. It feels a bit flimsy with the bumper, but once you put the two top brackets on its friggin solid as a rock. 4 screws-piece-o-cake. Half the price, half the work, and twice as nice as the other billet grilles, what's not to like?

If someone's worried about drilling invisible holes I'm surprised they aren't afraid to scratch the finish on factory bolts and screw heads??? :dunno:

AFBLUE 7/6/07 09:14 AM

Looks great! :nice:

kevinb120 7/7/07 10:23 AM

Upper and lower grilles now! Heh, same-angle picture of my car for the 8th time. Lower grille took about 4 minutes. They say to pull the lower cover off, but I just put the clips on loosely, maniuplated them with a plastic pen, and tightened. Stock honeycomb stays in place-perfect fit. I guess that would be the 'honeycomb hideout' now...

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...0/100_8856.jpg

And with the black paint it even holds its own with god-awful flash photos

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...0/100_8855.jpg

Phorty 7/7/07 01:33 PM

The front of your car is in a shadow, I can hardly see the new grill...

n00bstang 7/7/07 01:36 PM

i can

bigmyke23 7/7/07 11:21 PM

The grilles look incredible! :nice:

Falchion 7/23/07 03:26 PM

I got the Moss black billet grill too! Looks real good, but the instructions say to drill even though the Moss webiste says no drilling required! Errr! :banghead:

I guess I'll try it when my car comes in. Looks real good on both of your cars! :nice:

kevinb120 7/23/07 04:18 PM

its easy to drill, and its all hidden by the stock pieces if you put them back. I just pushed an awl through the lower holes in the bumper...

more pics here:

Falchion 7/23/07 06:45 PM

OK, thanks Kevin! :nice:

It does look pretty easy......

I got a voice message from the Moss Tech Dept. They said you do have to drill for the grill, and that they're going to change the product description on their website for the grill.
