Largest rear tire
Im saving up for 18X10's rear, and 18X9's front in the near future.
Not sure how much wider you could go, but that's a good width for me. 285-40 and 255-45, back to front.
this is a good place http://www.mustangtuning.com/2005wheels.html

On a S197 a 285/30ZR20 is what we installed for test fitting our new 20X10-inch rims they fit well in the back. On the front we suggest a 255/35ZR20 or a 245/35ZR20 on a 20X9-inch rim. On our prototype 18X10-inch rims we used a 295/35ZR18 it fit well but looked to short in the wheel opening on the rear of the car. As for fronts 18X9 with 275/40ZR18 look real good and work all the way around as well.
On a 10-inch rim a 285/40 first perfectly. You just have to be careful on a 9-inch rim because of section width of the 285’s. They start to bulge at the sidewalls making them susceptible to road debris.
The 18x9's in the front rub against the inside of the fender whenyou crank the wheel all the way around also. No I havent noticed cluth slipping (its an auto). And one other thing is that there is no a noticable shift to the left in the wheels in the rear, the left rear tire sticks out of the wheel well a little while the right rear is completely under the wheel well, I heard you need a adjustable panhard rod to fix this.

Is there a site or online calculator that will tell me the widest tires I can put on my GT with 18x9.5 Rims? I'd really like to keep all 4 tires the same size for ease of rotation and handling.
Thanks,
Jeff

Put the stock tire dimensions in the first column and what you want to go to in the second. Then down at the bottom it will tell you the difference and things you need to look out for.
The Grand Am Cup Mustangs run 18x10 with 275/30/18 tires all the way around. They use 3 peice wheels with the a 2 inch outer and 8 inch inner rim. Not sure if that comes out to 8" backspace or not but you can get an idea.
I think it comes out to about a +60 Offset
