Hood struts w/fiberglass hood?

Just bought this hood

http://www.americanmuscle.com/kaenen-cowlhood-0509.html

One of my coworkers said that my hood will be a lot more brittle with the struts I was curious if this is true? And if I will have to be more careful? Use just 1 strut? Any help is appreciated!!!

SCHMOKN 6/29/12 07:45 PM

I ran struts on my Cervini hood. I don't see that you would run into any issues.

NJ3 6/29/12 08:06 PM

I use Redline struts on my Cervini's hood with no problems.

SilverSkoundrel 6/29/12 08:18 PM

So far you guys got me @ ease! :D

cdynaco 6/29/12 08:25 PM

prop rod only

I ran my Cervinis Concept hood with MRT struts for a time. The main issue for me was that the hood was a little too heavy for the struts. Unless it was really warm, the pistons didn't have enough oomph to keep the hood up. So I've reverted to a prop rod for the past couple of years.

SilverSkoundrel 6/30/12 11:29 AM

I gotta find my prop rod just in case :\

youngstang90 6/30/12 01:52 PM

Just have your prop rod there for if the wind picks up. That's what my buddy does at shows when he walks away from the car. I know it kind of defeats the purpose of the struts, but it's added support.

SilverSkoundrel 6/30/12 02:06 PM

That sounds like what I'll probably end up doing

Redline struts don't need a prop rod for extra support. They easily lift my Cervinis Concept hood from 12" to 18" from closed to fully open with no problem and they hold the hood fully open in the wind. Now I didn't try it during a hurricane but I trust them more than the prop rod. :p

SilverSkoundrel 6/30/12 06:55 PM

My struts are just some off the Internet cheap ones

Tbar 6/30/12 07:57 PM

These are great struts for the added weight of a fiberglass hood//http://www.281motorsports.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=174 9

SilverSkoundrel 6/30/12 08:04 PM

Fiberglass would be heavier than the stock hood?

NJ3 7/1/12 06:53 AM

Yes, fiberglass hoods are heavier than the OE aluminum hood.

catman 7/1/12 08:34 AM

+1 Your fiberglass hood is going to be heftier than the stock aluminum item.

SilverSkoundrel 7/1/12 08:37 AM

My coworkers are all saying the fiberglass hood is lighter?

SilverSkoundrel,

Awesome choice, that hood looks sick!

I don't see a problem with running a hood strut kit with that set up. If you are worried about it, then the keeping the stock hood rod there is a great option.

As far as weight goes, in most cases fiberglass hoods & Stock aliminum hoods are within a pound or so of each other.

Let me know if you need further assistance! Our Mustang Experts are here Monday-Friday from 9AM-9PM EST and Saturdays from 9AM-5:30PM EST. If you want to hit them up, their number is 866.727.1266.

Thank you for the business, we greatly appreciate it!

Does anyone know stock hood weight? I read on AM that the hood I ordered is 69lbs boxed.

The stock aluminum hood and sound padding weighs 33 lbs.

SilverSkoundrel 7/2/12 06:10 PM

Big difference than 69ish pounds

Think about an aluminum canoe versus a fiber glass one of the same size , which one do you think is heavier

pegasusphototx 7/3/12 08:16 AM

I had a fiberglass hood for a while and bought some struts with more oomph for it. I may still have them laying around and could send them to you. Just pay shipping. I'll look tonight and let you know.

Hey GREAT hood :D

SilverSkoundrel 7/3/12 12:51 PM

That's a 3" ?

06blackvertstang 7/3/12 07:20 PM

I believe it's the 2"

Same concept either way! :)

SilverSkoundrel 7/3/12 07:42 PM

O ok nice

06blackvertstang 7/3/12 07:50 PM

Yeah. I really go back on forth on my hood a lot. Sometimes I like it bc it's beefy, but other times it just looks too overpowering. I think once I get my CDC aggressive on with it it'll balance out. But it took me forever to decide on the aggressive because the classic would just be too small and the same for the cs front. But it also looks really really nice with the roush front.

SilverSkoundrel 7/3/12 08:37 PM

I like it either way

Another thing to consider with struts and fiberglass is the possibility of warping the hood with the struts.

I have no idea if this would happen, but I've read that some guys had slight bowing where the struts were in the hood.

Sorry, old thread, but hey, search function works!

This, had me searching for another option.
Ive had the Steeda Cowl and MRT struts for nearly 8 years, but never kept them on, due to a slight hood bow along the fenders when closed. I only put them on when working under the hood or car shows.

I think there has to be a strut for a fiberglass hood by now that will, 1 hold the weight, 2, not bow the hood.

Well, in case this matters...

I bought the Cobra R hood for my '06 from Cervini's directly, and then got the MMD struts, after I was *assured* they would do fine on that hood.

Attachment 178002

And they do. Fantastically. I have every confidence in them. :nice:

... That said, the prop rod is still there just in case... :D

...well that, and I'm a lil' lazy about it... it's not hurtin' anyone stayin' there...

Can't say there's a bow in the hood from 'em at all.

Gigantor 4/9/16 12:06 AM

I have a TruCarbon hood and of all the hood struts on the market I like Redlines' the best. I had them for my stock hood and now my carbon fibre hood. They attach further up on the hood more towards the middle and it goes up with just a finger and the wind doesn't blow it down.

Silverskoundrel if you don't go with Redline struts be careful with the others as they put more pressure on the hood when you close it.

Hey Gigantor. I've got the same hood and want to get the red-line struts but wasn't sure about which version to get...for the stock hood or the aftermarket. The aftermarket set-up requires you to rivet a bracket to the hood. Wouldn't the fiberglass crack?
