I want to install some hood pins but I'm worried that the lanyards will scratch the hood. Will the lanyards flop around a lot when driving on the highway?

I also share your concern. I've been looking into locking hood pins, but I haven't found any that would work well. In order to install the pins on our cars the pin must be really long because the bar that you have to drill through is two sided and is about 3 inches thick (not solid).

I did purchase hood pins off ebay a couple weeks ago and when I took them to a shop to have them installed that's when I found out that the pins were not long enough.

Do you have any pics of where the base of them are installed under the hood?

Cool, thanks. The reason I want to see them is because their position in that photo is different than where a shop was going to install the ones on mine.

The one thing that I'm worried about with the pins that don't have a lanyard is that anyone can take the pins out. Could someone walking by your car in a parking log just yank the pins out and steal them.

No, the pins are screwed into the enginebay and the only way to remove them would be to open the hood.

Yes and that happened to one of the members from this site. Someone took his pins, he didn't know it and drove away. Hood flew up and did major damage. Worst part was, he just finished installing his custom hood just a short time before this happened. It was such a nice hood too

Looks like a little confusion going on. The "pins" are not screwed down in the engine bay. The posts are. They get bolted to the frame in front of the rad. The "pins" are the pieces above the hood that you slip through the hole in the post and then clamp them in place with the lovely little circular clip that is attached to the pin and flips over the post to prevent the pin from vibrating out of the hole. If you do not have lanyards or the style of pin mentioned above (Steeda) it is very easy for someone to steal your pins.

Ah, ok...thanks for the clarification. All of the ones I have been looking at have been "locking hood pins" which require a key to open. In that case there is no way to steal them without opening the hood.

O.K. here are the photos of the Pins in the engine compartment. Reference location for pin placement is indention in the core support by the headlight strap. The slide pins can’t be removed from the hood as the scuff plate captures them if you will notice in the earlier post.

Thanks for the pictures. In order to install those did you have to remove the headlights? If so, then I assume you had to also remove the front bumper to get them out?

Being as my car is the press car from 2005, Steeda installed them before I took delivery of the car. This does how ever say a lot for the quality of the pins because this car has been in the hands of many a driver and editor who have opened and closed the hood who know how many times and the pins are in excellent shape. I would assume that you have to remove the bumper to remove the headlights. We had to on our SEMA car when we were working on it. If I were you I would just call out to Steeda and ask for Chad or Steve they are the ones who would know because they are the guys assembling the cars in the shop.

I dont know of any on the market. Having them powder coated or painted is just going to cause them to chip eventually. Can't help you there.

good question. I've only ever seen silver. I know you can't paint them because the paint would just scratch off.

About the guy who's hood flew open.... i'm confused....... Even if the hood pin latches were removed, wouldn't the stock hood latch still be holding the hood down?

Yup, he removed the stock latch. I'm still looking into installing hood pins just to keep the hood from wobbling, but I would still keep the stock latch.
