Question GT/CS Scoops - moment of truth!

I have them. They are painted. They are ready to install.

Now the hard part... to drill or not to drill? I'm suffering from drill phobia at this particular moment, but yet I hear horror stories of the 3M tape alone not being strong enough.

Or... should I even install them?

I'm on the fence, need your opinions on how to proceed!!!

Help!

3M tape is fine. Just don't skimp on the prepping, and you'll be fine. Most of us have been well over 100mph with 3M taped scoops with no problems. If you're really worried, you could try the 3M tape, and check on them every so often. If you notice that it starts getting loose, then put the screws in. You can always go back later and add screws. You can't easily remove holes.

As commented before... 3M will be fine. Make sure you prep the area well. Personally, I could not drill. When I dry fitted them, I wasn't 100% sure that I liked them. If I ever decide to remove them, I will not have to worry about patching 4 holes. Besides, the push plugs are DOT required. They really offer no holding benefit. The tape is what holds them to the car.

I just had this same problem with the Roush Spoiler. And it requires drilling. I just couldn't do it. But its day 2 and they're still on firm. I was on the highway all day today.... nervous as hell.... but they held just fine.

Drill it and put your mind to rest. Just pretend you have a GT/CS (as those are all drilled).

Easy for me to say.. I don't have this mod nor plan on installing a set.

They would look good...you probably need to sand the area real good with 200 grit or something like that to get it to stick well. But those more than anything get caught in the wind and maybe I'd suggest screwing but I myself couldnt drill either

Drill lots of holes. It adds horsepower!

I would not drill, the tape will hold them on just fine. I have my rear spoiler and the quarter scoops on for 4-5 months now and not one tiny problem. Don't drill incase you decide later to remove them. Just my $.02.

Good Luck

It depends on how long you may keep them on. If you keep them on for 2 years, and then decide to remove them, you will probably have paint fade and possibly some rub/wear marks.

The same thing happens with satellite antennas: if you remove it, you may see where it was originally.

I say don't put them on at all. I'm not a big fan of scoops on the S197. If you insist on getting scoops I'd recommend the xenon scoops as the flow better with the body.

I second that motion. The scoops seem to take away from the smooth lines of the car.

IMO, they look better without than with. Not to say they look bad with them, just better without. But, to each his own.

EDIT: well, now that I look at his side profile shot again, they may look pretty good, especially on black. Man, I can't make a decision on anything.

So, here's my answer: since you have them, you might as well try them. And, since that's the case, you shouldn't drill unless you know you are happy with them

Except for one thing: if you leave them on for too long with 3M tape, you might as well just drill, because the paint is going to fade around it, and you may have rub/wear marks where the scoop touches the body. I bet when you go to remove them, you quickly put them back.

Or, if it's holding well, you could just replace the tape if needed down the road

Thanks guys for all of your input!

My 'Stang, side scoops, and drill have a date with destiny tomorrow.

Wish me luck!!!

(oh yeah, and I'm also going to beat that FOCing harmonic balancer bolt! Steeda UDPs will also be conquered in a victorious rematch!!!)

The only thing actually making contact with the car is the 3M tape. There is no plastic to metal conatct. As far as paint fading . Well, anything is possible, but buffing the clearcoat will usually bring it back. I'm not too worried. Nonetheless, anything will be better than patching four holes. Who knows, I may leave them on... at least now I have an option... BUT, I see what you're saying.

I didn't drill mine. They were installed last July. I even have run mine through the dreaded touchless car wash. As for fading, my ride was treated with a Clearcoat by Simoniz when I bought the car. Even tar rubs off when wet with a rub of my thumb while washing. BTW, I got a sweet deal on a Shelby CS 750 remote start/car alarm system this week... My wife bought it & is paying for the install for Valentine's Day. Can't wait to try that out when I have to go out inthe PA. cold... Finally; the 'Stang handles masterfully in even these icy conditions that are extremely bad this week. You should see the looks I get driving her around...Only thing, she needs a good thorough interior cleaning when it warms up.-Coach

I'm getting it installed on March 1st. The directions claim it can be modified for stick. I'll let you know how mine works out, but I have an automatic. I am partially disabled, so I don't want to deal with the clutch anymore... FYI, these systems origionally were sold at Hillbank's for nearly 5 bills. This I got at millionBuy.com on Ebay for $129.95. They even offered an extended warranty. It's Shelby's top of the line. My Tech that is installing it claims I got a great deal. We'll see...-Coach

I would not say that mine fit the body panel that precise. They are slightly warped. I feel safer with the pins as a secondary measure.

So what do remote starters have to do with this thread?
