Front Mud Guards - Do we need em?

My Jaeger Brothers front mudflap just broke so I'm thinking about just buying the OEM Rear ones for the GT and not going front. Do we really need the front ones?

I don't know that anyone "needs" mudflaps. At least not in the same way that your "need" brakes or "need" headlights. I've never had them on my car. But certainly if you like the look or your driving conditions make them practical, then by all means get them. I wouldn't think it would look too weird if you only did the rears flaps and not the front. JMO.

of course we don't need mud flaps for the car to run but my question is if we do need mudflaps because of snow/mud then do we really need the front ones? what have people done if they needed mudflaps in the past?

MBK, JMO here, but I would think just the rear would be fine, since they are your drive wheels. You're less likely to have the fronts kick something up at launch, which is when I would expect the most "crud" to fly off the road.

Your front wheels kick up just as much road grime from road construction, as does your rear wheels. I don't know about you, but I used to get most of my stone chips while driving at highway speeds, on the highway. Far more than in local stop and go traffic.

That being said, I highly recommend using both front, and rear splash guards if possible. If your unable to use your Jaeger Bros. flaps any longer. I have seen an 05-09 Mustang that had OEM flaps on both the front and rear. If I'm not mistaken, there is no difference between the OEM flaps from 99-04 to 05-09. Therefore, you can either order an OEM set for the 99-04, or order 4 OEM flaps for the 05-09

Here in Vegas, with all the construction and stuff, I get a lot of stuff kicked up on the side of my car. Its especially discerning when I'm cruising on the freeway hearing horrendous sounds of the road and rocks meeting with the side of my car. I plan on getting the GT500 mud guards because of their lower profile appearance in my opinion.

Exactly the very same conditions here in western PA, and if it weren't for my Jaeger Bros. splash guards, I'd have stone chips all over my rocker panels for sure.

Agreed. I have the rear OEM GT guards and believe they do a good job. I live 1 mile down a gravel road so I have noticed that I have quite a few rock chips on my rockers and wish I had installed some sort of front flaps. My main focus was to protect the rear quarters from my "retro" rear tire look...

MBK,

I stand corrected. Seems like popular opinion is for all four. I guess I'm just glad I've never really had an issue with it. The only crap hitting my car seems to be on the front bumper and very front of my hood. ....or at least the only stuff that has left a mark.

the 4 jaegers were the cheapest, easiest, best thing I did for my car. Would do them again in a heartbeat. My front flaps are covered with various debris that would have been covering the rockers and doors.

I don't think so, unless there was a set of flat, non contoured flaps for the 99-04. I had the OEM flaps on my 03 GT and they were specially molded to fit the New Edge body only.

I don't have mud flaps on the front or rear however I do know that if I had front mud flaps I most likely would have less stone chips along my rocker panels.

There were definitely sets of OEM flat, non contoured flaps for the 99-04, however the flaps I saw on the 05-09, in question. Were definitely molded and contoured.

In the meantime, I'm just going to assume the owner purchased an OEM set of molded flaps for the 05-09, and somehow fabricated them to fit onto the front's as well.

^ Now those I remember - a set of molded flaps for the S-197's - they are squared off on the bottom though and not rounded like the molded set for the SN-95. I'm using the GT-500 guards on my GT/CS, and was thinking of just using a set of the plain ol' cheap flat mud guards cut down a bit for the front. I'll be glad to post pics once I get it done.

The GT500 "flaps" aren't that useful. Neither are front flaps. The worst part of using flaps is rubbing on the paint that is covered by the flaps. Grit and dirt WILL get behind the flaps and rub your paint. Using front flaps that extend below the rocker panel will just reduce your ground clearance. I noticed our rear bumpers are designed in a way to attract the least mud/dirt compared to say, a Crown Vic or E-series van. I have the OEM GT rear flaps and stopped using them about 2 years ago.

Charlie, were your OEM GT rear flaps molded, or flat

They're molded. Even if they're flat, grit/dust can get behind it and start rubbing the paint. The same goes for the front grille/lower grille. Any time you have a space that can hold dirt, it will rub over time and remove paint.
