Thumbs up

Well I just picked up my Ford Racing Hood pins and I must say, not quite what I expected. I am going to polish the posts because they are pretty dull looking. The lanyards are garbage. Very thin, hard cables that don't even have a protective coating on the metal fasteners. Those will definately scratch. I am thinking about going to a hardware store and getting better cables. I have laptop locking cables that are nicer than what FORD provides but they are black and I want silver.

What experience have you guys had with these kits? Are you happy with the parts that were included? The kit just looks a lot cheaper than I had expected. Also, for those of you that connected the lanyards, what did you mount them to under the hood because the opening in at the end is very small.

Good post. I was just going to buy a set, but maybe I'll hold off on them.
The set looks great in the online store photos - stainless steel, etc.

Where did you get your set, John? I got mine from Summit Racing and the posts are polished and the lanyards have clear plastic wrapping the metal wire, and it is thick. I think you should send those back and get some from summitracing.com.

Well I found a new cable that I can use, just need to get some fasteners from Home Depot to rig something up. I have not drilled the holes in my hood yet. If I can't get them to look the way I want I most likely will not install them. Another thing I noticed is the way the pins fit the holes on the posts. One of them is very tight, which is good. The other is looser than a girl on one of those "Girls gone wild" videos.

Here is the best pic I have of my hood pins. I can get a close-up later today when I get home though... if you want. Let me know.

Mine are from FORD. They are the real FORD Racing Hood pins. Funny thing is, the picture on the summitracing website when I do a search for FORD Racing hood pins look exactly like the ones I received. Is there plastic around the metal fasteners on the lanyards? Are you landyards really stiff or flexible? The ones I received are very stiff and want to retain the coiled shape that they were shipped in. Also, when you received yours were they in FORD Racing packaging?

I had the same problem with my pins, now that you mention it... one was tighter than the other. Did you try switching pins with posts to see if that helped any? Once you actually install the posts, close the hood, and slip the pins through, they will be tight if you install the posts at the right height. I would seriousy consider sending them back though. I'm sure you can rig something up that'll look good, but this is the front of your car we are talking about.

Oh, I understand what you mean now... yes they are stiff and want to stay coiled, and they always will. But once you put them on the car, they will curve around and under the hood, like in my pic above. I mean, if you don't like the look of the lanyards and like it cleaner, leave 'em off... it'll look fine. But if you want the lanyards, you can definitely get them to look right with a little patience. And then once you have them in the right spot, they'll always stay how you want them.

I re-read your original post and I thought you meant that the lanyards themselves didn't have plastic on the wire. You mean the metal fasteners as in the loops on the lanyards?

Yes, the metal fasteners as in the thing that makes the loop.

Ok, right... you just slip one loop into the pin (after you open the round clip all the way) and then once the post is installed, you put the pin into the post so that the lanyard loop will be trapped between the round clip of the pin and the post itself. Then just mount the other loop somewhere under the hood. I just slipped mine on either side of the plastic radiator cover. Way up by each corner of the cover, you can slip the loops down under the cover and the metal blocks right by the loops will catch on the inside of the cover and hold them in place.

You'll see when you slip the pin into the loop of the lanyard that it's very snug and that you don't need any plastic there. It's not going to scratch the pin. Nothing that you will see anyway.

Oh, and as far as the metal fasteners at the ends of the lanyards that make the loop... those will be facing up int he air. When you slip the loop onto the pin, slip the loop through the round clip first and then slip it on the pin. That way when it's installed, the bare metal fastener will be sticking up, not under the round clip and won't touch anything.

You can kinda see here on this pic of Eleanor that the lanyards face up over the round clips and then wrap down under the hood so that the metal fastner isn't rubbing on anything.

ah,I see. Ok, guess I will do some experimenting when I get home. Oh, by the way, just got another set of rims in today with a different backspacing but due to the weather I won't be picking them up till next week.

Torq Thrust II's, the latest set, are sitting at the tire shop right now, but they are in the states, and, as a reminder, I am in Canada. I don't want to get them mounted right now because it is still snowing here and the spinners have not arrived yet. I just want to make 1 trip to get them and then figure out how to get back without paying duty fees.

All this time I thought I had patience. My wife disagrees with me big time.

Go to a source for Classic Mustang parts, and pick up a set of lanyards for a 69 Mach 1.

You will be happy with those.
