I saw something about that on Autoblog a while ago. I had to watch the video of the door retracting to believe it. I dont really see much practicality for it. Door work just fine opening out. I try not to park close enough to other cars for it to be an issue.

it can work, but it isnt probable nor practical. I've got a car that I can drive with no doors (gotta love the jeep), but this wouldnt be a good thing I dont think, because if a wire breaks or something, you wont be able to open the door.
While pretty cool, it doesn't wow me. Maybe because I've seen them before. Does anyone remember a car made in the early 90's by BMW? It was called the Z1. It was only available in the U.K. That car has these types of doors. Take a look at the pics below. The 1st picture below is with the door closed. The 2nd picture is with the door open (it slided down, just like this concept).
I'm surprised you could take off with the door open. That really needs a safety switch not allowing the driver to engage the car in the drive mode before taking off.Its really cool though, some 2dr coupes have doors that wiegh a lot and are heavy to open on an incline.
