Cobra badges

I've been paying more attention to the badges on Mustangs lately. Yesterday while at the dragstrip, I must have seen a half a dozen GT's of various years with a Cobra emblem of some type on them.

I'm sure it probably drives the purists a little crazy, but if you have the power under the hood and are not trying to pass it off as the real McCoy, I see no harm in it.

I saw them on Fox's, S95's and a New Edge with Cobra emblems on the wheels. A very nice S197 with nice wheels, and mods sporting Cobra fender badges running low 12's. No harm no foul in my opinion.

Anyone else notice this?

I've seen V-6 Mustangs with Cobra plastered all over them, what you gonna do? Tell the guy to take them off? I have the fake gas cap Cobra on my Stang. But I still have the GT emblems on the front fenders.I've had a couple of guys ask me why I put the emblem on...I tell them Ford made it really easy for me.I must have seen five fake cobra cars at the Rocky Mountain Round-Up yesterday. Lots of tribute cars and not many in stock form.

Agreed. The Cobra emblem on a car that obviously is not a Cobra or trying to me is perfectly fine.

Not that any opinion besides the owner's matters (I don't have any snakes on my car, BTW), but when I see a car at a car show that has snakes on it and it's a V6 or GT, I really don't take the owner seriously. He's not "fooling" anyone.

A large number of GT owners have more than the Shelby GT's 319HP under the hood, and many more are still waiting for a GT350 from Shelby. I think people are tired of waiting and making their own. And with Ford Racing and Shelby themselves selling the cobra badges and even the "SHELBY" lettering, what's to stop anybody from putting them on their cars? There was a post somewhere where somebody pointed out Shelby's own ad that said "make your car look more like a Shelby with these emblems".

I think that using the cobra badges on a non-Shelby car is somewhat acceptable as a sign of respect and sort of a tribute, as long as they're not accompanied by the Shelby name when that is not the case.

I fear that this thread will evolve into another heated "Shelby badges - yes or no?" debate, wherein the arguments of all potentially involved parties have already been heard many times before. Merge or close?

Well said, like the fact I am running V6 badges on my GT simply because I wanted the old school look.

Ok, I just found the official rules for whether you can put a Cobra on your car.

Here they are:
1. If you have a car that is model year 1966 or earlier, you can't put the cobra emblem on your car because they didn't exist prior to the 1967 Shelly GT 350 and GT 500 (I'm talking about the coiled one not the 1966 style).
2. If you have a 1967, then you can only use the badge with the yellow background. Also your car must be as fast as the 1967 GT 350.
3. If you have a 1968-70 car then you can use the coiled cobra emblem as long as your car is as fast as 69-70 Shelby GT 350.
4. If you have a 1971-1975, you are not allowed to use the cobra emblem.
5. 1976-1978 owners can use the cobra emblem as long as your car is as fast as a 2.3L equipped Cobra II.
6. 1979-1992 car owners aren't allowed to use the Cobra emblem at all (but 79-81 car owners can use the flamming Cobra hood sticker if they so choose).
7. 1993 car owners can only use the Cobra if their car is as fast as a 1993 factory Mustang Cobra. The same rule applies to 1994-2001, and 2003-2004 car owners. E.g a 1999 car owner can use the cobra badge as long as his/her car is as fast as a 1999 mustang cobra.
8. 2002, 2005-2006 car owners are not permitted to use the Cobra emblem.
9. 2007-2008 car owners can only used the Cobra emblem if their car is as fast as a GT 500.

Violations of these rules may result in legal action by Ford Motor Company and/or Shelby Autos.

i don't care what badges you put on your car.
but in my completely honest opinion, it's just tacky to mix badges.
like if i put a cobra on my grill and had gt's on the side, it would just feel like i'm a complete idiot. As if i don't know what the cobra means, and as if i just ignorantly put it on because "it looks cool". just my .02
mismatched badges are tacky and gaudy.

Remember Shelby Motors will sell anybody any overpriced item on his shelf that makes him a buck, even if it is furthering the " Cobra.Wannabe-Tackies" Purity of the product isn't the rule anymore...only$$$$$$ is.(IMHO)So live and let live. These Cobra badges only fool morons.

People get so uptight about badges.

I'm going to put some Bowties on mine and call it a day. Then I won't be accused of being a poser, or a wannabe, or for building a clone or "tribute". In fact, I think I'll drop in a ZZ572/720R crate motor in it and call it a Mustaro. Of course I'll also stick a couple Cobra badges on it as well...

The Shelby GT doesn't have cobras on it. but even if it did, your car is a 2005 and the Shelby GT is 2007 so you are not allowed to use cobras.

However, 2007 owners can use "Powered by Ford" badge

Hey I don't make the rules (or do I?).

Oh yeah I better add a so folks don't take me serious.

I think I'm a serious purist. I'm proud to have an 07 GT so I would never take my GT badges off for anything else. I believe the badges and special body panels should be left on the cars that came with them. I really like the GT500 spoiler but out of respect for that car I won't put one on my GT. (purist, I know) (Against popular opinion I like the stock GT spoiler) I think some well done tribute cars are nice though. I've seen some s197 Mustang GT's made to look like 1967 GT500's. And the attention to detail was awesome. But as far as to just putting a set of cobra emblems on a GT or whatever is kinda like putting GT emblems on a V6. A nice looking well done V6 doesn't need any GT badges. Just like a nice Mustang GT doesn't need to have cobra emblems on it to be any nicer.

See, that's where you got it all wrong: a 2007-2008 GT owner putting cobra badges on his car would be a poser, while a 2005 GT owner like myself would simply be paying tribute to past Shelbys.

So there, you don't get to put any Shelby emblems on your '08!
