Can you fit a 295 tire on a 9.5" wheel?

So I'm getting new wheels. They arrive next Thursday and because they are 19s I'll be needing new tires too. The wheels are 19x9.5".

I have been running a staggered setup for a couple of years now and currently have a 285/40/18 on the back of the car and the idea of going narrower just doesn't appeal to me. BFG makes a KDW NT in a 295/35/19. Will this fit? According to websites I've seen a 10" wheel is recommended. It looks like I'd run 245/40/19 front and 295/35/19 rear if this would work.

Otherwise I could look into several 285/35/19s that are out there. The Hankook Ventus V12s, the Nitto Invos, Falken 452s, and Kumho Ecsta XS. All have a 285/35/19 and most have a 275/40/19 that could be run too.

A 9.5" is as narrow as I would go with a 295 tire. I just went through this with my Mach. The previous owner of my BBS RK wheels had a 265 on a 8.5" rim in the front, and 295 on a 10" in the rear. The 265s push the limit of getting the tire off the rim when I had new tires installed. The "touchless" machine and installer had a very difficult time getting the seperation needed from the wheel to the tire because the tire was too big. (Plus the fact the the inner sidewall was splitting because (so I'm told) the tire was too wide for the rim.)

Needless to say the Mach is now wearing skinnier rubber. 245/40/18 on 18x8.5 up front and 285/35/18 on 18x10 in the rear. Though performance is much better. I could have went with a 295 on the rear but decided to run a 285 to see how they'd look and feel. I racked my brain selecting tires. But I finally settled on the Sumitomo HTR ZIII (based on reviews/talking with other purchasers, cost and application as I am going to go HPDE driving in the near future.) I went from old BFG T/A KDs that were standard on the 2000 Cobra R. I am very surprised at how well these "cheaper" tires have performed.

If you are looking for that little bit of extra width in the wheel-well you could always get a 1/8" spacer for the rear too . . .

Thanks Jason.

I think I'll go down to Discount Tire and talk to Jeremy and see what he thinks. It was mentioned to me that they might order it in and do a test fit if they were so obliged. That would be sweet.

I hate this because a 295/35/19 is the perfect height tire for what I want. A 275/40/19 is a 27.7" tire and a 285/35/19 is a 26.7" tire.

Why does this have to be so hard?

If it doesn't fit, just mini-tub the rear.

19" wheels have a much more limited tire size availability it seems and they are a lot more $$$. Just wondering why you went with a 19" instead of 20"? I am running 295-35-R20 on my rear end on 10"wide tires. I would think you could fit a 295 on a 9.5" rim, but you might not get real good handling in any hard cornering.

I feel your pain. I went thru the same thing a couple of months ago. I would advise to stay within the recommended rim width for a given tire size. The manufacturers have those for a reason.

I went down to Discount Tire and we talked about it and looked at the options and we're going to give the 295/35/19s a try on the 19x9.5" on the rears. He said if it doesn't work, or I don't like it we can go to one of the other tire sizes in a different brand. I asked him twice if that was alright, and it was his idea and he said no problem, if it doesn't work he'll just have a tire he can never sell to anyone but a Vette buyer.

So my wheels come in Thursday and the tires should be there before then. They're coming from Michigan and Dallas. So next Friday by this time I should know. Hopefully it works out.

IMO I think the 295's are going bulge out pretty badly on a 9.5 wheel.
I have a set with 295's on a 10" wheel and they have a slight bulge.

I just took this shot ,sorry for the quality it's a reference of how wide they are.

EVIL CAPRI I got a set of rare BBS RK's too. Not trying to hijack the thread or anything.

I was kind of thinking if it is a problem I might could send the wheels off to be widened.

Just add 1" to make it 10.5"

What kind of wheels are you going to be running?

I would give this guy a call if you are thinking of widening a set.
The shop does some quality work.

Those are some great looking wheels Gary post some pictures when you get them.

On a side note, I few months ago I found a vendor that carries a wheel exactly like the V710/RTR's in a 19x11” with the correct bolt pattern 5x1143, the only problem was the offset was to aggressive low 20's. The wheel would have to have a 48-52mm offset for it work.

Yeah. These have a 33mm offset, which is not ideal for the rear, but I could easily add 1" on the inside no problem. So at least I know I have an option to keep the 295's.

I'm excited. Should know by next weekend, provided everything works out.

Then I'll be able to install my GT500 take off Brembos too.

I don't know. They may look like crap on my car. Who's to know?

Yes the offset on the rear concerns me Walt. I've seen the pics of Stingers car. I can say that I did not get as tall of a tire as he did with his 1.5" drop. His is a 27.7" and mine is a 27.12". I know thats only about a 1/4" difference but every little bit helps. It'll be interesting to see them on an 05-09. I'm not sure if the fenders and wheel openings have the same reference points. I may be in for trouble for all I know.

We are both dropped 1.5". And I have removed excess weight out of the trunk. We shall see what happens.
