brake lights?
brake lights?
I was looking for but couldn't find the thread(s) on making my third brake light work for not only braking, but also to have all three light for the blinkers. Having only two of the three looks ridiculous to me. I like how my '68 taillights worked and would like to recreate that on my '06, any help please.
The inner or 3rd section of the taillamp already has the correct bulb in it, but the socket itself is simply not wired to light up the bright filament in the bulb like the outer two are...
There are two types of sockets. Later models like my 08 (late 06-09) have sealed ends where it is impossible to add an extra pin to the existing socket. Early models (05's and early 06's) have the provision to add an additional pin to the existing socket if you can find the pin itself as a service replacement.
Alternately you can buy two extra replacement sockets same as the two outer ones which have the 3 wire pigtails.
Once you get your extra sockets, you can splice the running lamps back into the existing wires plus also splice the additional wire into the turn/brake wire from the outer two sockets.
I used a simple alternate custom lighting method and simply switched the 2nd and 3rd bulbs and sockets with each other so that only the outer and inner flash. I like it much better than just the outer two sections flashing and lighting up with the brakes.

Even with this set up you can optionally add the three-wire sockets to just the center sections to light up exclusively with the high mounted brake lamp. Thats what I had done on my 1994 Mustang with 1996 taillamps.
I put off going further with any of the mods above because I have been wanting the sequential turn signals. Well I had just ordered the kit to convert it and the package should arrive sometime this week.

Steve had replaced the inner sockets with ones he ordered through Pep Boys.

Yep they can be ordered at any retail parts store as well as any Ford dealer. I am not sure of the price but be sure to check teh Ford dealer before you order because they may actually be cheaper than ones you special order at an auto parts store. If I was at work now I could check it.
Last night I installed my sequential taillamp kit. Piece of cake. Installing the additional sockets was just like what you will need to do. The sockets the company supplied with the kit used actual Ford sockets. They are the early style sockets

I've done this. Bump this thread or PM me tonight and I'll check the part number of the socket you need when I get home. It's down in my basement as I've replaced my entire harness w/ sequentials, so I still have the OE harness that I modified to allow all 3 to light up like you want.
Here's how to get all 3 to light up: (Ignore my high mount LED brake light, I've got the CDC ducktail and it covered up the stock 3rd lamp)

Buy this part: I got mine from pepboys.

Cut off your in-board stock taillamp socket.

The new one comes with a 3rd wire that activates the brake light function. It comes with a black socket. I took some chrome spray paint and sprayed it chrome (careful to tape off and keep paint off the contacts and rubber gasket) so it would match the stock sockets.

Now wire it in like so:
Socket wire - Harness wire
Black - Black
Purple/black - Blue/yellow
Then take the green wire from the harness, and tap into the red/white wire of the middle socket that activates the brake function. Don't cut this wire, just tap into it.

Finish however you'd like, solder, scotch-lock, etc... I'm comfortable w/ just electrical tape and I had no problems. I don't know if other years harnesses may use different color codes, but the principle is the same.

Did some searching, it looks like maybe Conduct-Tite changed some color codes on their harness.

The back of my 85885 socket has the wires marked:
GRND = BLACK
MINOR = PURPLE/BLACK
MAJOR = GREEN
I'd guess the one in the above link is going to have the same markings on the back, even if the colors are different.

No need really to worry about the color codes on the socket pigtails. Just go by position. Black on the end is always ground while the center is Minor (running lamps) and the remaining one is Major (turn/brake).
That Dorman/Motormite Conduct-Tite packaging must be confusing with the Chrysler application printed on the front. I would have had to do a parts lookup by vehicle model to see if it referenced it to a Ford or not. I would have never known that was the same socket unless I brought one in with me to compare it to.
