auto-off headlights

Anyone know a way to change the headlights so they turn off when the car turns off like the radio does? I like to drive with them on all the time.

What kinda of car ? New Mustangs just time out and if you leave them on they will also shut off as well.

2005 v6. Even though it goes ding, ding, ding they will shut off eventually. Gonna test it out now. Can I disable the dinging?

I don't know how you can disable the dinging. The headlights will stay on for at least 10 minutes too before shutting off. I've never really tried it before though. Let us know how long it takes for them to shut off.

5 min and counting. I can't be the only person who ever thought of this. There must be a way to change the wiring and put it on the circuit with the radio or at least yank a fuse that makes it ding.

I always thought Ford missed the boat on this one , last car I had, had auto headlights, came on when it was dark and shut off on its own. Never turned on or off the headlights. I can't count the times at night I have pulled out without the headlights on.

So I guess when you start up the car your headlights are on?

I've never owned a Mustang that has had auto-lights. If it was that important I guess I would have bought a GM instead since it looks like all their cars have had that feature for years.

My F150 has it, so Ford didn't entirely miss the boat on this one.

Install the Ford autolamps controller. Its in the accessories catalog. Listed for Mustangs up to 04 but one additional relay will let you install it in 05 and up. I have one in my shelby. works great.

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a novice, especially with electrical stuff. How do you install the controller and what does "one additional relay" mean exactly?

Thanks

this is from www.fordaccessoriesstore.com I think it is what you mean.

Automatic Headlamp System Lights
Part Number: F8AZ-13B218-AA
MSRP: $86.29

Never touch your headlamp switch again. System automatically switches the headlamps on whenever darkness is sensed. Also features a time delay that leaves the lights on for a preset amount of time after parking the vehicle. Daytime running lights will activate during daylight. Engineered for complete integration with vehicle electrical system. Dealer installation recommended.

Anyone know if the DRLs activated are the headlamps, foglamps, or amber turn signal lamps?

WOW! $90 for the autolamp controller??!??

I paid ten bucks for mine, brand new in a box from Fleabay. Check around before paying full freight.

Now I still need to install mine... it *is* a bit daunting with all that wiring and such. I do know automotive wiring, but I admit I do get tired just looking at the controller. It's still sitting on my workbench.

JCThorne, where did you mount your light sensor?

And this is all because the switch is that hard to turn?? Even with the autolamp cars I always just turn them on and off manually

Yes. that is the critter. I paid about $60 for mine. Aftermarket ones do come up for cheaper but I wanted genuine Ford. The extra relay is because Fords prior to 05 switched the power side of the headlamps through the HL switch. Later cars use a smart Jbox and the switch controls a ground circuit imput to the smart jbox. Therefore the 12v output from the controller must trigger a relay to control the input to the smart jbox.
