We all know the stock one is way too big ... and I don't want to be bending and breaking the one that comes with it ... is there a good (and short) alternative that can be purchased?

Try a google search for "billet antenna". I got a 12" brushed aluminum antenna for my truck that looks great, not to ricey, just a nice touch.

Yeah it does look cool. I found the 8" one and added the link. It's black, 6" smaller. I don't know what I will go with, but I will replace the OEM one. I would suggest some loc-tite with the new one. Kid's in my area wouldn't have a second thought to stealing mine to add to their Honda, Acura, or other ricer import.

I think the 8" is too small. Unless you are in a good signal area you will not get a lot of stations.

I've seen kits to add a power antenna...not sure if there's enough clearance in this car though.

I dunno about that. I really like my 79 Cutlass (and 79 Hurst/Olds, for that matter) that had the antenna integrated into the windshield. It looked cool too!

Of course, I imagine it would be more expensive to replace the windshield if it got cracked...but I have no deductible on glass anyway.

The 'do it yourselfer' is very easy and takes about 5 minutes.
You literally take it off...snip it with wire cutters....and glue the ball back on...

Thats what I plan on doing.

There's a couple of complications with your idea. First, the ball must be attached to the mast with a conductive adhesive or silver solder, otherwise the ball will not help collect charges. Second, the ball has to be drilled to fit the new mast diameter at the tip. Third, I remember a black coating on the antenna, it should be removed in the bond joint.

Basically a good and cheap altenative-I like it. Boomer, please please post your results.

If your are really into it, go to Radio Shack and buy a cheap Signal Strength Meter. Make sure it has the corrent antenna connector, otherwise you'll have grief making a connection. You can then check your work before and after. Even cheaper, use it twice and return it!

The easiest way to do this is buy an adhesive windshield antenna from Radio Shack. It's basically a thin wire inside of some scotch tape that you can run up and across the windshield, cut to the proper legnth. Reception isn't as good, but you can still get most channels fairly well, locals crystal clear. It's less than $20 bucks and easy to do, try it and peel it off if you don't like it.

I cut my antenna to 18" last night, and then put the ball back on top. Absolutely no loss in reception. Here is a pic...
