Are 285/40/18 on a 9" rim really a bad idea
I have the 18x9 bullit rims and the car will have the pro kit on it. I really would like 285/40 on all four so its close to the stock size but they call for a 9.5" rim. Is a 1/2" really that bad of an idea? It seems I have heard that you can get away with it. I know I can do 275/40 but that will be going +1 in rim size and going down almost .5" on the overall diamater...I dont want too harsh of a ride.
So what is everys thoughts....anyone running 285/40 on a 9" rim?
I am looking at either the toyo T1-R in the 275/40 or the BFG KDW2 in the 285's.
Thanks

If you are going with the same on all four corners, then go with the 275/40. I personally think that the 285/40 is too big for the front, however it looks good on the rear and you can mount it on a 9" rim.
You most likely can get away with it but don't go crazy around any corners or you might pop the bead on one of the tires.
Oh, and if you ever have problems with the tires, your warranty, if there even is one, can be void because it was not installed on a recommended rim width.

I was origianly going to stagger the widths 255/285 but then I started thinking I would rather be able to rotate in this point in my life ($$). So you think a 285 on the front doesnt look right or it wont fit with the pro kit?.
I thought it should fit...on my last car it had 7" rims but I ran 235/45 and that called for a 7.5.

Mark, if you can't do the staggered setup, I recommend the 275/40/18's all the way around. I know the total diameter is a little smaller than stock tires, but once you lower the car it will look good, trust me. There are so many reasons why you shouldn't put 285's on the front and on a 9" wheel. Just play it safe and get the best of both worlds with the 275's. Just my two cents.
Yeah maybe so...maybe just 275's then. I just worrie that the lower diamater will make the wheel gap to big even after the springs. Isnt it like almost .5" difference between the 275 and 285's?
Dont worry I will...I will get some pics on monday and post them in there own thread. I dont have the car yet (maybe by xmass) so you will have to wait to see them on a car. They are just the normal bullits so its nothing new on the rims.
I think so too. I really wanted the bfg's in that size but they dont make them. I didnt think they made the toyos in that size till i called my tire guy. Its not listed on the toyo site...but I also called toyo and they confirmed the size. I would have gone with the goodyears like you got but my tire guy doesnt get them...and well...I pay the tire guy with my company check so you can see why I went toyo
I could have also gone with falken grb-fk451...

I am about to go drop my rims off so they can mount the tires when they come in today. My exhaust should be in today as well...who said mondays stink
Now hopefuly the car comes in this week like it says on the erl!!

Tires are like shoes and pants - just because they say they're the same size, they do vary big time from manufacturer to manufacturer. I've seen Nitto 315's on a 9" wheel and they look great. But I've also seen other 315's on a 9" wheel and I'd be scared to drive it 5 feet! I had Sumitomo 315's on my 96GT, then went to Pirelli P7000 315's and there was a very noticable increase, at least 1" wider for the Pirelli's.
