Saleen's Gurney Signature Edition Mustang
#21
IMHO the blue & white1969 Boss 302 Trans-Am Mustangs raced out of Shelby's race shop are best looking Trans-Am race cars of all time.
The Saleen-Gurney Mustang looks great too and is a nice interpretation of those 69 Sheby Boss race
With that said, I'm not quite sure what slapping Dan Gurney's name on that blue Saleen has to do with anything. Peter Revson and Horst Kwech were the regular Shelby drivers of those blue 69 Boss Mustangs with Sam Posey (who gave the Shelby team their only win in 1969) filling in for Revson.
IIRC 69 was the year that Gurney split with Ford, going on to drive Plymouth Cudas in the 1970 Trans-Am series.
For your viewing pleasure here is the Shelby Racing #2 car driven by Horst Kwech in action at Lime Rock Park in 1969. The race was won by Sam Posey in Revson's #1 car.

In any case the #2 car didn't have much of a race history with Kwech or Gurney.

Much more believable now.
I like it. The seats are a nice touch, but as with the Parnelli Jones Edition, I wish they would have stripped it down a bit. ie no back seat, weight reduction all around. These should be like what the Cobra R was. I guess you can't ask for everything.

Here's a few design tibits I've come across...
Gurney wanted his model to have more power than the PJ Saleen so it got the S/C motor.
(I guess even retired racers still compete at things.)
No quarter window covers because he didn't want any visibility restriction as on the PJ and Heritage models.
Wanted the "Foose" hood and no rear wing because it better matches the look of his 69 Shelby T/A racer.

I saw this car at the NYCIAS a couple of weeks ago on dispaly in the Saleen 'showroom'...and man was it amazing!! I have posted a few pics I took of it. Sorry the pics are a bit dark and It was very hard to get decent shots due to the crowd CONSTANTLY in my way of taking pics.

I believe there will be 300 of these cars made. 100 each of Blue, White, and Red. Also Dan is supposed to have tuned the suspension on a saleen mustang himself, and that set-up is what will be used on his cars.

I love this car. The only thing I would do if I bought one, is take off the white chin spoiler, wrap it up and keep it nice and new in the garage, and put on the black version off the PJ car/Heritage kit. With the white chin spoiler, its going to get so beat up from stones and such. Other than that, ITS A SICK CAR!!! Still love the seats.

I really like those wheels. And the small spoiler lip looks good too. I think the upper grille should have been out of the same material as lower grille though. I like the mesh, but the should have used it all on the front.
Just noticed the four exhaust tips. That rocks.

What he said. I'm not really feeling much else though. Not a fan of the seats or the striping, even though I know it's there for a reason. Looks like a CDC ducktail on the back.

I just wanted to let everyone know that i signed the papers a few days ago and my dealership is the newest Saleen Dealer in the nation. We are in northern NC, right on the border of Virginia, but have sold cars all over the states and some to Canada and our Ford GT went to England. I am hoping for a good relationship with Saleen and also im looking forward to working with the great machines they put out.
With that being said, I have 3 of the 300 Dan Gurney cars on the way with pretty low bumper numbers! None of the orders are set in stone, so if one of you guys wants one, please send me a PM and you can pick it out. If you want a specific number i can put a request in for it (dont pick 1-10 or 301).
I dont normally post stuff like this, but the Gurney car is rare and I have learned alot from this forum and i would like to give back to you guys. Sticker is what we are asking (especially from mustang forum guys), not an outrageous amount over (somewhere around 60K including freight and gas guzzler tax.)
If you want other saleen stangs just let me know and i would be happy to help.
PM me or give me a call at the store at 336-789-9591 and ask for Justin.
