How much for a cobra engine?
As an svt owner ,I came to the realization that the new cobra will be out of reach. And that bothers me a little. I went to the auto show in NY last sunday to check out the new cobra. very cool car but the gt looks almost just as nice. Ok here is my idea!!
How about an immidiate swap of engines. Take out the brand new gt engine . Sell it!! and buy the cobra engine!! This could work!! Anyone have any guesses on how much a new gt engine would sell for?? Anyone have an idea how much the cobra engine would cost? I'm just brain storming here to save some cost! I want the new cobra but it looks like it might be out of reach. In that case I'll settle for the next best thing. Why not make the Gt a project car. Eventually with time and some xtra $$$ you could acheive the cobra look and performance.

You'd have to put on a new hood, there are probably different connectors and other things. This would probably be a heck of a project to shoe horn in. Then there are the brakes, the radiator, the suspension tuning, interior, the transmission, etc...
Motors are sort of like computer chips; you aren't really just paying for the parts, you're paying for leasing the equipement (people) to make it / capacity usage. So there's a huge fluctuation in what ford could charge depending on the volume, or what they choose to make on the motor. The materials are probably under a thousand dollars. (WAG). What they'll charge? $10K, $6K, anything in between. But that's without tranny, installation and all the other fun stuff....

Add the clutch, the 6-spd transmission, brakes, wheels and tires. It would wind up costing more. That's why SEs and SVT products are always a better deal than the after market tuners.
To get close to the Cobra numbers, why not just put a blower on the stock 4.6? You wouldn't have the torque, but you would be lighter and better balanced. Not to mention, it would be a heck of a lot cheaper (though sans 6-speed).
Another idea would be to put an '03/'04 Cobra motor in. I think the GT500 engine is just a 5.4 version of it. You wouldn't quite get the torque, but with the numbers those engines can put out with the aftermarket, I am sure it would be more than enough (unless you are racing).
If you are looking to build an exact Shelby replica, it will always be more expensive to do, and never get the same resale (not being authentic).
But, if you are just looking to create a similar performing car, there are MANY options out there already that can be had for much less money than the GT500.
